Hello to all,

Just wondered if anyone had an opinion on what stall you guys are using in your auto trannys. Starting a build of a CJ7 and going with a GM Turbo 400 /Dana 300 . Anyone have an opinion to share???

Thanks Captainlance,

All my other off road stuff is currently standard shift. Age, long legs and a tender knee are prompting a switch to the auto. Especially with the ultra short wheel base of the cj series. Therefore the CJ7 /auto build. Sucks to get old!

I had a "towing/economy" convertor in my GM Turbo 400 behind a 401. This convertor worked great for crawling because it locked up at a very low rpm (900-1200ish range). This was with 35x12.50's and 4.56 gears. The problems with this setup were that it felt sluggish off the line on the street, and if you were trying to creep down a hill slowly, you had to put the Transmission in neutral, because it would drive through the brakes even at idle. I now have a TCI "Saturday Night Special" convertor in a GM Turbo 400 behind a TBI 350. This is a mild performance convertor that stalls in the 1600-2000 range. It is a lot of fun on the street, does not drive through the brakes in low range, crawls very well, and still provides enough drag for compression braking going downhill. I believe a stock convertor which will have a stall in the 1300-1600rpm will provide similar performance. If you are using the jeep for low speed crawling, make sure you have a good cooling solution for the Transmission .

I appreciate the input. I'm not sure what converter I have. I got this GM Turbo 400 online pretty cheap. The po got it in a deal and had no use for it. He got it in a trade. I need to change the output shaft so I had to tear it apart. End play was .060, twice the max spec. Also three springs are left out of the direct drum!!

So.... After finding this stuff I will have to check everything now.

I have to research which converter I have. I know it's heavy duty. Then I will decide what to do. I was just going to put the output in and put it together. Wouldn't recommend the builder whom ever it is!!!

It helps to hear from some that have wheeled with an auto.
