I'm pondering the idea that as I remove parts to replace or repair them, putting them back together with hex bolts instead.

Has anyone done that, if so, what are your thoughts?

I have, my '86 was full of them. This way I don't have to carry an extra set of wrenches on the trail. Removing them can be tough though, like having to use vise grips or drilling the heads off after you have stripped them out. I have noticed that they have an interesting thread though, as they are not round, but sort of three sided. I guess they also provided a quicker assembly, when originally built.

I also have an 86 and replaced every torx I could find. All dash bolts, windshield hinges, tailgate hinges and door latch bolts are now chrome. It looks sharp.

I changed out all of mine also. I either used hex heads or socket heads depending on where they were, and what looked the best to me.

Most of mine actually came out; I was shocked at this. Total take-down involved cutting out/off 5 bolts, including the roll cage and seat belt bolts.:D

I will be changing a lot of them out as well. Guy at the parts house is going to freak out when I show up with a bunch of little baggies of rusted out stuff!

Any place on the exterior or any "structural" location I've replaced them. But things such as the dash mounting bolts, or the door post latch, or the sun visors, etc., I've left them in place.

Replace em. You will hear a ton of stuff on how to get em out. But the best way and now my to to after they strip is to buy a bunch of grade 8 3/8 or 9/16 course thread bolts, grind the paint off the head of the torx bolt and weld the bolt to the head of the torx.. Give it about 30 seconds to cool and use the new bolt to remove the torx. Through both bolts away and replace with new.. Works like a champ.

Any benefit to using stainless replacement hardware?

Besides it not rusting.. No. Most stainless hardware for sale is made from 18-8 grade stainless.. Not as strong as the standard torx. You can try getting 316 stainless but its still not as trying and costs a ton more. You can pick up fhscs.. Flat head socket cap screws from fastenal or other fastener company's for a decent price.
