I had an '83 CJ-7 which I used as my primary / only vehicle but it rusted out. I would like to get another though with the fiberglas body. Currently I have a '12 Jeep Patriot.
Is there anyplace in the U.S. where you can go 4 wheelin' for any significant distance off roads without having to stay on trails?

I know of trails in So. Cal where you can go a significant distance and I know of areas in So. Cal where you can wheel anywhere, but I don't know where you can wheel for a significant distance and not have to stay on the trail.

 What would a significant distance be? 10 miles, 100 miles? Im confused about wheeling but not on trails. We have miles upon miles of park/gravel/back / etc roads with most having dirt roads off them. To get off the trails would be blazing a new trail. Horseback or 4 wheeler maybe but I have a extremely difficult time walking my CJ7 thru our woods even with chainsaws loaded:D
. Telico is close to me and alot of folks still hit Aetna Mtn..

I guess I'm thinking miles of sand dunes where you can just go.

Have you been to Silver Lake, that's the only place I know of near you.

Long ago but its really to small. I was hoping for an off road vacation with some camping along the way.

Baja! Yup, not in USA.

rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

There are many places here in SoCal deserts that you can go quite a ways and not touch pavement. Depending what part you're in depends on how much you need to stick to the trail (Wilderness Protection Act of 94). Myself and a few friends head out for 4 days a couple times a year to explore, usually put about 100-AMC 150 offroad miles on the Jeeps and most trips never see another sole :chug:

Nice, sounds a lot like what I have in mind...how about death valley, is that totally regulated to the point of uselessness?

I have spent many vacations and Club Jeep trips in Death Valley and its surrounding area going all the way to the Sierra Nevada mountians, early spring and fall is the best time to go. Having four wheel drive is pretty much a must have plus a desire to spend a lot of time on foot. There are numerous web sites and forums that are devoted to this area. For many people who enjoy this area one lifetime is not enough time to see it all. I am sure there are many locations back East that are similar though, its a big world.

I'm a desert lover and a hiker/backpacker so walking is no problem I just sometimes like to get a jump start and move as far out as I can before I get out of the vehicle. Since I live in a non-desert area all of my outdoors activities take place in forests and swamps. I may just have to move to somewhere hotter and drier.
All the gov't websites were shut down while I was researching vacation options.
Thanks for the replies.

I think I'm a little confused. Are you looking for a place to 4 wheel where there are lots of established trails and two tracks or are you trying to find a place where you can drive where ever you want?

The ideal is to be able to go in any direction that I want without a trail that is required to be followed....doesn't sound like we have much of that anymore.

I'm not so sure we ever had all that much land to just ramble around on, at least not since the great prairie clipper days. In some ways that is still the same. If you go on horseback there are millions of acres to roam around on. In a vehicle the deep woods aren't open enough to drive around on, the prairie and the desert are far too fragile. I am no environmentalist so, I thought it was a bunch of nonsense until I moved to the desert southwest. Tire tracks disturb the desert crust which starts unwanted plants growing or out and out erosion channels. More than likely the scourge of the wild lands …. ATV’s …. have ruined any sympathy for 4 wheeling in remote areas.

Yeah, I sometimes think I was born 50 or 100 years too late for all the really fun outside adventures.
