'79 Cj5, 258 with Howell Fuel injection kit, T18 with dana 20 Tcase, dana 30 front with Detroit locker, AMC 20 rear with LSD and one piece shafts, Warn 8k winch, 1" body lift, 2" suspension lift, 33 tires
Does anyone know the difference between a 74 CJ5 and 79 CJ5 ? I know the shaft splines are different but besides that are they the same? I rebuilt the tcase for my 74 and was going to swap it into my 79 due to that one leaking/weeping. I know the gear ratios are different and that I believe is just the speedo gear in the tcase?

‘72-‘79 CJ Dana 20 besides the rear out splines they have no changes, same 2.03 gearing as well
Bronco had 2.46 gearing
FSJ had a different shift pattern
Jeepsters had a different front yoke.

That's what I thought. Are the front output splines the same? As far as the speedo gear, can I pull and swap that?

I don't remember the spline count, but the course spline seems to more common with the CJ D20s. Every one I've seen (they were all from 74 to 78 CJs) was the course spline rear output. The fine spline is easier to find yokes for though, because it's the same as the Dana 300 and NP231.

The speedo gear should be interchangable, but if the 74 had lower gears than the 79, and the 79 has larger than stock tire, the 74's speedo gear will get the speedo closer to correct. This is assuming the 79 has not been regeared to match the tire size.

Oh interesting I never knew that. As far as the speedo gear,,the 79 has A different RP Than stock so I am assuming that it is set up to run with bigger tires but I am unsure

I believe all front outputs have 10 spline.
The rears have 10 and 26 spline
