I have a 1983 CJ7 with the original 4 speed T-176 Transmission . It shifts and drives fine until it is all warmed up. Then I hear a god awful rattling noise which goes away when I push in the clutch of course. I changed the fluid as a first step, but the noise is still there. Is it time for a rebuild or a new tranny?

Does the Transmission still shift smoothly? What you are describing sounds like a throw out bearing.

X2 on the throw-out being the cause

Pretty much has to be the throw out bearing then. A few other possibilities would be a broken friction disc spring, or a worn out pilot bearing, but my vote is the throw out bearing.

Ok then the next question is how safe is it to drive an extra 10 miles once it starts rattling. Like I said, the first 5 miles or so are smooth and normal, but I need to get it home to my garage to get working on it, which is about 15 miles from where it is parked now.

Definitely not inside your Transmission . Most likely throw-out bearing or clutch disc or pilot bearing. My money is on the throw-out bearing.

I like to baby my ride, so if it was me, I'd find someone with a trailer. I have free towing with my auto insurance, so that would be my next option if you have something like that.

In a perfect world, have it towed. In the real world, about all that is going to happen is you will further wear out the throw out bearing. Same with a pilot bearing. If a clutch disc spring has broken, frequently they stay on the disc. I once had a throw out bearing fail in West Virginia on a J10. I had to start it in gear, and shift without the use of a clutch. Once I got it home to Wisconsin, I changed it.

Every Time i've had a bad throw out bearing it only made a noise when the clutch pedal was depressed, as soon as I let out the clutch the noise went away. It also wasn't intermittent like the noise you are describing it "always" did it.
Throw out bearing is still a possibility though. But i'm guessing a broken spring or a bad pilot bearing.
Only one way to find out for sure...................

Don't overlook a dried up and worn out pilot bearing.
What weight oil did you put in the tranny?
How many miles on tranny and the clutch?
How much free travel do you have in the clutch pedal?
You want no more than 1 1/4" clutch pedal free travel.
