i have a dying Transmission in my car (1991 jeep cherokee sport 6 cyl, 4 litre)

the clutch assembly is new. i was wondering how hard it is to swap out transmissions? im an ok mechanic. all just stuff to keep my cars going, nothing professional or anything. i definatly shouldnt be rebuilding anything.

so heres a sweet website i found

TRANSMISSION REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - M/T :: 1984 - 1991 :: Jeep Cherokee XJ :: Online Manual Jeep

thats what im thinking i need to do. and when im asking if this is a hard task to accomplish i more mean like skilled. i can lift stuff and make rusted bolts come out. but if i firetruck up something delicate im screwed.

heres what i hoping, i could just get one of these

1991 JEEP CHEROKEE - Transmission, Transaxle Manual Transmission, 5 Spd, 4x4, 6 Cylinder, 5-Years Warranty - Car Monkeys

and just swap it out and plug it in to my existing clutch.

also i do not intend on buying a new Transmission , im more thinking i could just go to the junk yard and as long as the fluid is good just assume the Transmission is good.

thanks for hearing me out and helping.

A Transmission with a warranty is the way to go since you do not know how to rebuild one, or get yours rebuilt, they will want your core. You will be taking a risk if you just by one from oil condition, most yards only give a replacement warranty for so many days. And while your Transmission is out, check your clutch, u-joints, mounts and all related components, and repair or replace what needs it.

I wouldn't buy a junk yard tranny unless I could take the cover off and looky-see the insides.

Just what makes you think the tranny is dead?
When was the last time you ck'd the oil level.
What tranny is it?
How much freeplay do you have in the clutch pedal? You only want 1-1 1/4" of free travel.

Tranny replacement is a fairly straightforward part swap. Your biggest trouble will be handling the weight of it while getting the engagement angle right so it'll slide into the pilot bearing.

If you have a swap unit...MEASURE THE DIAMETER of the input shaft on the old and the replacement units and make certain they match BEFORE you try and mount it. You never know what a PO did before you got to it. Even measure a rebuilt if you buy one online...it's happened to me and it's seriously frustrating to try and mount one that won't fit the snout because it's too large, and you can't see it as it doesn't go in...:mad:

Don't but a rebuilt unless you can get direct references from PO's that bought that unit from your supplier. Get a copy of the warranty IN ADVANCE and read the fine print, BEFORE you buy.

And, like already said...consider replacing the small parts you only see when the tranny is out (fork/springs/release bearing/pilot bearing etc.), in addition to giving the U's a good greasing or replacement as well.
