So we have been working on my sons jeep and I haven’t seen anything that can answer my question. My CJ5 has a 305 with a 4 speed but reverse is up and to the left. Is this how they all are in terms of options of transmissions?

I agree there is no telling what Transmission you have being it has a sbc engine. But if you want to get some good factual information on transmissions and may help you identify what your setup is, I'd suggest exploring Novak's website. It might give you clues as to what you possibly have now and what you is the most desirable transmissions to use behind a sbc engine or any conversion for that matter. Tons of info on that site. It will break down what transmisdions have what, like gear ratios and mayne shift patterns as well.

From the sound of it, are you looking for a different Transmission ? Also, what do you refer to as a four speed? Are you counting reverse or not? I currently run the stock T-150 Transmission . It's reverse is also up and left. My NP435 is a ford truck Transmission I will be converting it over to and it's reverse is down and to the right. So are you lookimg to convert or just trying to identify what you have? Novak would be a good place to start looking.

I think the SR4 Jeep used in the CJs had reverse left and up, beside 1st. But i wouldn't expect one to hold up to a V8. I don't know if any other transmissions that bolt to the SBC have that pattern or not.

I do not count reverse as a gear. I am trying to understand what I have so I can prepare to replace if need be. I would love to put a 5 speed in it if possible but not sure yet

Post some pictures if you can. With the swapped in SBC, who knows what else may have been swapped.

Before considering a 5 speed swap, find out what gear ratio and tire size you are running. A lot of the 80s models CJs came with 2.72 gears that make the O/D pretty much useless, especially with larger tires.

You can’t expect us to give you an accurate reply with such little info.
You need to crawl under your jeep and take pictures, post all stamped numbers, take a picture of the cane.
I can give you a good guess on what you have but that’s what it would be without additional info.

Was not trying to be insulting. You would be surprised. I was looking at you working on a CJ5 , I think had two options in a cj. A T-150 which is a 3 speed, and a "jeep" T-18 which is a 4 speed. I am trying to figure out if they did an entire drive trane swap or did just a different swap using a conversion bellhousing. You would be amazed at corner cutting people do on swaps. So just trying to figure out what you have, reason for the question.

Posi is right. Post some pics if you need help figuring out what you have.

Sorry if it offended you, not my intention.

The T-150 & T-18 were only options up to '79. According to his lists as an 80. The options in '80 were an SR4 4 speed or T-176 4 speed. '82ish the SR4 was dumped for the T-4 4 speed & T-5 5 speed.

If the Transmission is original to the Jeep it would be the SR4 and the 7th digit in your vin would be A, C, or E.
If it’s not original and the 7th digit is an H it would have been a T-176 .
The T-176 was also found behind the AMC 232 i6 , and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l as well.

Much easier to post pics and codes.

Wasn't considering an '80. Those are two different bellhousings I think. I know in my own search for a bellhousing, there were two different ones, T-4 or T-5 type and T-150 and T-176 . I thought the T-4 came much later though. Learn something everyday.:)

Not offended at all and will take pics this Sunday. Planning on doing some work on the jeep then.

No picture of the cane
No casting #'s
Its a SR4 /Dana 300

Where would the casting numbers be? I tried looking for the casting numbers but could not find them.

For the SR4 /T-4 /T-5 , They are on top of the Transmission , between the bellhousing and shifter.

From the shift pattern and pictures, it looks like an SR4 /Dana 300 combo to me. I'm surprised it's lasted behind your V8. No experience with a V8/SR4 combo, but from what I've heard about that Transmission , you might want to start planning a swap.

You list a 305 as the engine...If it's really a 305 (GM) and not a AMC 304 (AMC), then your Transmission options maybe differ from the standard CJ stuff.
