Has anyone replaced that cheesy connection between the steering column shaft and the steering gear box with a REAL u-joint? Mine is trashed, great time to upgrade. 1980 CJ5 with manual steering. Thanks.:chug:

One of the first things I replace on most CJ's. The stock one leaves a lot to be desired. :)

IMHO

for $2.50 I choose to rebuild the original.
It is unique, to my experience, I have never noticed one like it on any other vehicle. They again I never really looked. the original seems to have worked well for a long time with no maintenance at all. In fact, when I did notice mine and took it apart it was and had been full of dirt, no lubrication at all, for a long long time. and it still worked well.

I put a Chevy power steering box in years ago with the 'rag' joint. (rubber disc) Pure garbage. I was replacing it every year. Failed on the trail. I went the Flaming River route, shaft and column, and don't look back. Also ARG box. No slop. No Problems. Well worth it.

THANKS people! Good to have some options. I'll keep 'ya posted on which way I go.:)
