Ultimate Adventure 2009 Road Day 1
After having a very successful trail day in Butler Pennsylvania it was time to hit the road to our second location, somewhere in Ohio.
But this being Ultimate Adventure and our fearless leader being Rick Pewe this was no ordinary road day. After a bright and early wake up call for the 6:30AM drivers meeting where General Pewe (watch the '08 video) informed us that we would be driving 400 miles and doing 4 trails along the. Yes that's right; it was a trail day too.
Our day started off by heading out of Butler to one of the guys that runs the Outback Off-Road Adventure Park's private property. Hit land was covered with tall grass, beautiful scenery and nasty wet hill climbs. It wasn't too bad, more scenic; we even took our Suzuki Equator support vehicle on the trail, though we had to be winched out at the end.
From there we were back on the road, traveling through the absolutely gorgeous back country of Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio. Then the fun began.
First issue of the day, highway speeds. Most all were able to keep up the 60mph of the posted speed limit, but Fred in Fun Buggy, now with Clifton ridding shotgun, was fighting over heating issues and couldn't run more than about 45mph with out the temps getting too high. Luckily removing the windshield allowed Fun to breath and got Fred back moving again.
Right after that we were back in the dirt. This time at Skool. What is Skool? Google it... you'll figure it out... or just wait till the issue comes out. While at Skool our group of Adventurers ran several tame obstacles and then took on a couple more difficult obstacles. This is when things got complicated.
The first obstacle a couple good stucks and several memorable tries, though most all that attempted made it, with one Woman making it look super easy. Then on the second difficult trail all hell broke loose, sort of, when one of the larger vehicles, while attempting a left had turn up a steep loose hill out of a canyon took out the rear ring and pinion. The extraction of said vehicle took so long only three other vehicles attempted the hill, Fred, Keith and Sam, all in buggies, and all making it. Oh, and Tim Hardy, who showed up today in his Samurai with trailer in tow. He winched.
If that wasn't enough, after getting the broken truck off the obstacle, it wouldn't start. It would crank and crank but not start.
With all the down time and lengthy trails, and still AMC 150 + miles to go at dark General Pewe changed the plans and we made camp at Jeep Skool. We'll leave in the morning for our next destination. Wish us luck.
As always, for full details you'll just have to wait until the November and December issues come out.
Today's prize... the first ten (10) people to post a link to something relating to "Skool", be it video or information will get a 4WOR sticker and what ever else I can find that fits in an envelope that size.
