I've seen on some cjs on the net that have vents that are mounted to the underside of the dash panel. Just under the gauges. Are they an aftermarket thing? Or was this a little gotten option?

I'd love to have a set of these! The heater is amazing at roasting my feet off but by time it gets up past my knees all of the air leaks in the soft top render the heat to a little less cold than outside. It would be great to be able to aim the heat where I need it most. Any info would be great. How do they attach to the heater system? Do they replace the floor vents? Or do these plug in where that scrunchy part goes? Or if some one has a set in a parts jeep that they might part with let me know.

I believe what you're talking about is an air conditioner. I've seen many like what you described and that's what they were.

^^^ Most likely the factory A/C setup is what you're looking at. But...

That gives me an idea. There's an extra outlet on my 76 heater box where the defrost hose is:

JeepDefroster006.webp

I wonder about hooking up a dash vent to that? I'd want to reduce the air flowing out of it, as I don't want to compromise the already Limited capability of the OEM defrost system. Let me think on it a bit....

What you are talking about directs air from the cowl vent to your lap. The air comes from the upper duct (north of the heat) When you have the heat on it shuts the vent off.

Jammer1 is right, and most people removed them because they tend to dump water right in your lap.

dumps water into your lap how does that happen? that wouldn't attached to anything outside!

i'm thinking i'll have to mod myself some dash vents then. i was just hoping that there was something premade.:( not really the best thought out system was it?

It came right from the cowl, it was more like a trough. Lets see pictures so we are all on the same page. If it is like Hack Fabrication has - earlier factory, and the mid 5`s had the controls under the dash there. My factory A/C.

That looks like what I've seen. Doesn't look like it would be to hard to mos one in and just use it for vents.

Man that thing would be useless on a soft top! Might work a little in a hard top.
