'Easy Bake" has developed a polished pulley and the resulting squeal in the cold mornings is driving me crazy. Until recently I had a 105 amp super alternator in there and when the bearings went bad I swapped out for O.E. 50 amp. Of course the parts guy at the counter didn't know where I could find the O.E. double V belt pulley for an '81.

"That should've been scrapped by now" said the kid. mad.gif

I'm going to try and find out the shaft diameter tomorrow. Does anyone have a resource for double V belt pulleys?

Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid for any responses

Why do you think that pulley, is the source of the noise?

rub some bar soap on the belts first and see if that helps. The pulleys are probably damp and the belt is dragging slightly causing the noise. cheap and easy fix.

The wax and oils in soaps will cause more harm than good.

The noise is the belt squeal on these polished pulleys LG

the soap slicks up belt to slid in easier. It was a trick taught to me by my Dad went I was young to stop the belt squealing in the rain.

I have the same type of polish'd pulleys, and no belt squeal-
Something else is going on--
BTW-I don't use a 'cog' belt. Mine are solid and give more surface contact--

Then the belt slips even more without the noise-

My 2 cents on your question. If I where to replace that pulley I would get the machined steel instead of the stamped steel style. The stamped pulleys seem to
deflect ever so little.A good rebuilt shop should have the pulley your looking for. I always request the machined steel pulley when buying a new or rebuilt alternator.:) mike

Could it be that the pulleys are not perfectly in-line causing the belt to not ride straight? I had that problem before when changing pulleys on things like that. Try moving the pulley further in or out. It ALWAYS fixed my issues after a pulley replacement.

Good monniker turbojn ;) Hmmm alignment could very well be a contributing issue. I know the air pump (emission control) pulley was way out of alignment - now since disconnected.
Still in all I'm leaning toward the polished pulleys, a while back I took my Dremel tool to the groove and roughed it up a bit with the old alternator and it worked for a while but subsequent belt slippage has caused this thing to be even more polished despite the belts being incrementally overtighened (deflection)

Also, make sure the taper'd angle of your belt. Is the exact same for the pulley.
Again I will also say-Look at a solid belt instead of the cog'd belt for more surface contact which will reduce slippage.
Just how tight do you have the belts set??

Turbogus,
You have 2 choices.
1. Replace pulley.
2. Replace A series belts with B series (to ride higher and increase the pitch)

Mac used to get Pulleys (Sheaves) from Grainger (20 at a time) or if in a hurry Knects. He would buy the machined doubles or singles & spacers for Delco`s.

You no longer have 40* pitch on the pulleys, hence the slipping noise. It will not get better with tension, nor soap, or any other wives formula you use. 2 choices.

Speaking of pulleys... Does anyone know where I can get a Smog Pump Pulley for my 1980 CJ7 . It has power steering and a 256 cu. inch engine. I have been searching all over and cannot find one. I am trying to get it smogged and its the last part i need!

Torquehead,

Have 1 PM me, see picture. Also have all pulleys for v-belt AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

Thanks Craig, hoper you're doing okay up there.
Not yet LG, what with the 7 day work week I've jsut been chugging along. I'm thinking I'll try roughing up the pulleys with my lil Dremel tool and sandpaper cone to break the glaze and hoping that this helps. Otherwise finding a replacement pulley may be tough since a lot of these old Fords have been crushed by now.

Pulleys are shinny, at least all the ones I've run over the years. Question, do you have matching belts? Check tension of both belts, if they aren't very close to the same this might be causing your problem. NOTE to self, change alternator belts, one is much tighter than the other.

In my experience you could have 2 problems. 1 - The belt is loose on the pulley. 2 - You have excessive drag in your system. I.E. a component is going out/failing.

If I were you I would start by checking ALL the bolts holding the alternator on. I recently did a 6 month check on things and found surprisingly loose bolts on both the alternator and the air pump. ...... Well actually the air pump failed .... locked up, popped the belt and essentially fell off. So, I did a 6 month service just because. As you probably know there are a BUNCH of awkwardly located bolts, brackets and spacers holding the alternator in place. First I'd tighten the alternator's belt adjustment. I like to use a strap wrench, or a breaker bar that can be wedged in a safe location that won't break the alt. case. Then go after ALL the other bolts. Remember the adjustment bracket bolt is a 1/2" with the rest being 9/16".

Question: When you changed out the other alternator, are you absolutely sure the brackets and spacers went back in exactly the way they came out? I've done work on the front of my 360 enough to know there is room for error there.
