V8 oil pump gear alignment question

I notice that on the oil pump gears I have seen two dots, one on each gear. Are these to be aligned like timing gears or not?

Reason being, my old pump gears had dots on bottom of both gears. I bought another Melling pump and and one gear ( without a shaft ) has the dot and the other ( with shaft ) has the dot on top. If I align them on top it will be opposite what I have seen previously.

I say there is not any difference but just wanted opinions before packing/installing it.

The books I have don't specifically state that the gears need timed, but they are supposed the be a machined matched set. So in that respect I would line them up. Depends on the brand, they may not be matched.
