Hey guys, I have some oil leaking at the valve cover seal. I ended up getting a new painted steel cover. The one on there is the aluminum one. What do you guys recommend for sealing it? I have a new cork gasket. Should I just use that, use it with sealant, or use something else?

Thanks

Aviation-form-a-gasket, is the best I've found. :notworthy:
Make sure your PCV valve is clean and work'n 'rite'.

Wish this thread was available Saturday! My valve cover seal started leaking badly and I installed a new cork gasket with permatex black on both sides. Before installing I thoroughly cleaned both surfaces and also flattened out the bolt holes on the cover to give a more even seal. I've got a stripped screw hole at the front but felt enough pressure that I left it alone. Will probably be back fixing that later on.

Fel-Pro's blue Molded Silicon gaskets work great, no need for any goop either- just the gasket

What I like to do is glue it to the cover and let it set up before you install it. This way you don't have it wanting to move around on you when installing it.

Thanks guys

Not sure why you'd want to go with a steal cover when you have an aluminum one. Far superior IMHO. I have one with felpro steal reinforced gasket and permatex on both sides. No leaks since I put it on nearly 4 years ago.

Well, my aluminum one is the one with the very cheesy 4WD on the top. I wanted to paint the steel one, but in the end the steel one did not fit, so I put the aluminum one back on. I guess down the road, I could grind the silly logo off.

I wish I would have read mtnwhlr's post before I did the job yesterday! It was a real PITA to get it all lined up. Since I had a brand new cork gasket, I went with that along with the aviation gasket maker. The next time I take it off, I'll go with the Fel-pro.

The standard cork gasket is a pain in the **s to install. It'll just flop around when your trying to line everything up. Especially when you got a Inline 6. I would recommend getting something thats reinforced, so it will stay in place. Last time i did this job I went to Napa and paid like $40 for a laminate cork/rubber gasket. It was rigged enough not to flop around during install, but flexible enough to make a good seal. I also laid on a bead of gasket maker as a additional barrier, and the engine has been bone dry ever since.

You got an update for this? I'm pulling my valve cover to replace the gasket. I've ordered a plain Jane cork gasket I think but haven't picked it up yet. May cancel and get something stiffer.

You don't want cork......

Look into the Fel-Pro Blue rubber/silicon gasket.
