Long post I'm sorry.
Starting late last year my starter went out 30 couple bucks and two bolts later I have a brand new not remanded ac Delco starter. Very soon there after I developed a valve noise. The jeep would start fine be nice and quite and then as it warmed up I would get a slight noise coming from the front of the motor. As it got to temp it was a very pronounced noise. I drove it on and off over the winter and by this spring not at all.
Fast forward to now I'm going to Jeep week in OC Maryland so I decided to try and fix it. I figured a collapsed lifter was to blame so I ripped my head off.
I took the head lifters push rods to my local machine shop. All push rods and lifters checked out just fine. So I left the head to be stripped cleaned up have the valves and springs checked and new seals installed.
I cleaned and reassemble the motor (nothing was found to be bad in the head) with everything back to together I fired it up and sure enough the noise is still there. I thought maybe the fuel pump it's in the front and mechanical. I replaced it with a new one and still there is a noise. It's to "soft" and high pitch to be a rod knock or main bearing.
I'm kinda at a lose and pretty much ready to just let the motor die and begin cleaning up my stroker that's been sitting in my barn for several years now and drop it in. But before I do anyone have any ideas I'm wondering if maybe my starter Bendix is not fully retracting and what I'm hearing is the fly wheel brushing on the starter gear. Any thoughts?
BTW it's an 85 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in line 6 bored 40 over mc2100 carb hei ignition emissions anything is gone and the only vacuum is the power breaks and advance for the distributor.
