The Jeep was running very bad like the timing chain skipped a tooth/plugs fouled. After changing out all the ignition stuff (all the from the ing module to the the rotor) and timing set (which was loose but in time) I narrowed it down (with help form Jeepers) to vacuum. Tightened and installed new vacuum lines after I did all this work, ran great then started to stumble again so I bought a vapor canister as well. If it does it again then the next thing is to drop the tank.

O Reilieys part number CP 1061

NAPA could not find the stock vapor canister so I ordered one for a '93-'95 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I used a 5/16" bit to drill out the right side, then changed to 1/4" (I did chew up the nipple some)

Note: 5/16" hose to tank needs to be extended, a 6" piece should be fine.

Nice writeup, but does Nevada do emissions testing? I ditched mine years ago. Seems like a lot of work for???

Yes, some parts (Reno etc) but I'm out in the sticks so I don't. Just don't want the gas smell I was getting etc.

When properly plugged off, there is no gas smell. Mine came off in 78.

What is the proper procedure?

What did you do w/the vent line from the tank, plug it?

What about the OCV to the Carter carb, just from the PCV to the base of the carb?

What about the vent for the Carter carbs bowel, where did you run that?

These questions are as if you still had the Carter BBD as some still do.

What is the proper procedure?

What did you do w/the vent line from the tank, plug it? I removed it and plugged the tank.

What about the OCV to the Carter carb, just from the PCV to the base of the carb? Ran the PCV right to the base of the carb.

What about the vent for the Carter carbs bowel, where did you run that? Ran a hose with a loop to keep water out.

These questions are as if you still had the Carter BBD as some still do.

I have gone to fuel injection now.

Still a good post if you insist on keeping it.

Hey Rollbar, nice write-up...and a almost a year later, I searched and found it! :) I ordered the same canister of off Amazon, installed it as per your write-up, but I'm now having problems getting the Jeep to run over 50mph. When I start it up, takes a bit longer to run smooth. If I try to run too fast in 1st thru 3rd gears she bogs down, and when I try to run her on the Interstate (never a problem with the old canister), she bogs down badly over 50-55mph.

I thought I might have the hoses mixed up, but I've got everything running just like your awesome pics. Any ideas?

For ref: I6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , Nutter Bypassed, with a large dizzy cap and upgraded coil.

I never had a problem with the way she ran on the older canister, it was just I thought I might be able to get rid of some of the gas fumes (which I now suspect were just bad exhaust fumes).

Sorry guys for reviving an old thread, but hey, that's what the "Search" function is for, right? LOL! Thanks, and Any help is greatly appreciated.:chug:

TOBYWON, you might want to check the ports of your cannister to make sure they are breathing properly and the ported vacumn hole should hold vacumn. Check for any restrictions in the pcv,gas tank, and carb lines.

You could add a new canister as Rollbar did, providing you understand just how it works. The fuel tank should have a vent and rollover system installed and the charcoal cannister is just part of it. The oem CJ canister operation is similar to having a vacumn leak, where it is constantly sucking in gas and crankcase fumes where the new style does not require as much vacumn use from the engine.

Not sure if this is applicable still but Im in the midst of sorting out my canister and vac lines to comply with Ca smog, I also have Howell FI. Id imagine your 86 is much like my 83. That being said for one Howell has a schematic on their website showing how things go vacuum line wise. far as the canister goes here's the skinny straight from Howell for the stock unit anyhow. This is from the firewall forward, the canister if also marked with whats what.
1. Carb bowl vent gets capped off with a rubber cap
2. Next over if the tank vent which MUST stay hooked up the canister.
3. Next is the purge source. This line off the can needs to "T" into the PCV line and then the both will plug into a constant source of vac "non ported" such as the intake or below the throttle plate.
4. last one is the Purge control line. This need to tap into a ported vacuum source above the throttle plate.
I also needed to purchase a 4 port CTO valve to replace the stock 2 port. This will control the EGR and vac advance. Mine actually runs [retty damn good in this configuration. If you need the Borg Warner part number let me know, the CTO valve was about $30 at Orieley auto parts.
