Purchased a CJ5 on a Bill Of Sale stating it is a 1968. Finding a few things to indicate maybe otherwise. VIN Number is 8305 238029. Engine serial number is 4J468021. I was told that prior to 1967 F4 engines were stamped with 4J. Need help deciphering to what year mfg'd

Hey there,

I am from Turkey, reason why I'm writing this is that as you may know there used to be a factory in Istanbul in which many Willys were assembled. I am just trying to understand what kind of original characteristic my Willys got and what is changed before I got it. My serial number attached is 57548 139359.
First question is, according to cj vin decoders on the internet, first two characters show that its chassis is universal, 3rd and 4th show that it is a open body CJ5 , 5th character shows that its body style is universal, 6th character is left-hand drive, but on the 7th i got a "3" which doesnt mean anything. Do you have any guess?
Secondly, it seems that I should have a CJ5 but as you may see from the links, it seems like an original body of a CJ6 .
What do you think?

Welcome ! You have a really great looking jeep Looks like a fine example of something any jeep owner would love to have

@Belizean Thank you!
@Torxhead He is used to ridgeways, so whenever I am quite bored with the business and stuff, we get away for some time every day. :)

3rd and 4th digit should be 74 or 75 if its a CJ6 .

Unless the frame and body was stretched a CJ5 vin plate was attached at some point IMO.

Looking at links, it looks like a long wheelbase. CJ5 is 81 inches wheelbase. 1955-1971 CJ6 is 101 inches, 1972-1975 CJ6 is 104 inches VIN plate is screwed on. Coming from factory plate was riveted. VIN plate from CJ5 to a CJ6 body???. Jeep did not start putting side markers on front fenders 1968 or 1969. 1962 CJ6 ? My friend has a 1962 CJ5 S/N 57548 134072. 134072 Serial number was assigned July 1961 to start a build. As for the number 3 in 7th position got me. My VIN number break down tells me that the 7th number is engine code. With a #4 for F4-134 CID engine without emission. #5 F4-134 CID engine with emission. #6 for V6-225 CID engine without emission, and #7 or V6-225 CID engine. Sorry can't help on 7th number. Looks like someone did some data plate swap out IMO. Check for engine build code on your F4 located on the water pump boss at the front of the cylinder head block below thermostat housing. Prior to 1967 all F4-134 engines were marked 4J plus serial number. Post a serial number maybe I can help in year engine was built. Then maybe get a good year on Jeep. The data plate on your tub (body) indicates a build start date for a CJ5 in November 1961.

Just to clarify,

CJ's used screws on their firewall vin tags from the factory.
Willys Overland, Willys Motors CJ2a , CJ3a , CJ3b , CJ5 , and CJ6 used cross head and slot screws.
Kaiser possibly around 1964-65 and up used rivets
CJ6 came in 101 WB and 104 WB
Side markers on US built 68-69 CJ5 , a lot of exported CJ6 , CJ5 , CJ3b etc had fender side markers through the years.

To expand,

1976-1981 CJ6 104 WB export only

I have an export, US built, 81 CJ7 . It has two VIN plates one that looks factory mounted on the driver's side firewall with rivets and another just under the passenger side hood riveted to the wheel well that looks like it was put on when the Jeep got to Germany because it is in German. The info on both plates match though except for the language. I would imagine that any other export model would have the same or something similar, or at least it seems logical to me.
