Happy Sunday everyone!

Had a good weekend wrenching on the CJ and made some good progresses I will cover on the build thread but I ran into a problem. I need to get in and inspect the breaks and I can't get the break drum to budge and I can't get the Warn hub off either.
Here is a picture:

I have searched and searched but find guides for the new versions of the 6 bolt with the cover plate. This one just has 6 bolts and 2 screws (one was missing) pulled them all out and the hub comes out about 1/4" and will spin but that is it.

It is attached to a Dana 27' looks like 10" drums. I tried some penetrating lube around the brake drum/hub center and on the studs then some gentle persuasion but no go. So both are stuck on, doesn't look like the brake drum will slide past the Warn even if I could get it loose.

I also backed off the brake shoes with the adjuster before all that.

I have seen brake drum pullers but never had to use one.

So, can't get the drum or the hub off! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There should be a snap ring holding the hub on. Once you remove it the hub should slide out. The brake drum might need some convincing to come off especially if it hasnt been off for awhile.

Well i can't find a snap ring. The brass center, what you turn, is up tight against the body of the unit. It feels like there should be one, but don't see anything.

Could those two screws hold the face on? I tried to pry just the face off but that doesn't budge either.

:)The six bolts should take the hub off.........then a snap ring for the internal drive , then its 2 large nuts that hold the hub, brake drum & bearings in place.
I've seen those two threaded screws used before to jack the hub off.
Sometimes you can take them out and put a correct sized threaded bolt in there on both sides and start screwing in slowing alternating pressure from side to side, acts like a puller in reverse. Careful those are aluminum............
Probably rusted to the splines.

So like a longer screw put into the holes, got it, like a gear puller. I can try that, I got to about 1/4" out though just with a little pry between the steel hub and the Warn hub
. Here is a pic from the top.

Well that didn't work. All indications are the removing the two small screws should allow that front part, holding the locking device that you turn, but I tried to pry and to tap a screwdriver in to separate it but afraid to push too hard. I don't want to break anything.

Yours do look a little different than mine but you need to take those large bolts out. On mine you can take the outer cap off with some allen bolts and then there is a snap ring that has to come off before the rest of the hub comes off.

I think that yours will come off in two pieces with the little screws and the larger hex bolts removed.

The drum should come off just like you have it. Unless its pressed on but I don't think Jeep did that.

Just give the drum a few good whacks in between the studs.

:)Troy,

I looked at all my old literature and wasn't able to find any diagrams........
I believe the split has to be at that very first portion of the Warn hub just inside where the bolts come off........did you take out those threaded screw slotted studs?.............does it look like there is a dividing line there that would first allow the outboard portion to come off then you expose the snap ring and larger bearing nuts.? I'll keep looking.

:)I'm thinking the dividing line is just between the thicker outside area where the bolts are , between there and the finned portion...........it looks like in your picture there is some old gasket making material there.......if so put some heat on it (like a propane torch) and get a fine chisel or a razor blade that will allow you to split that area.

The drum will be swaged to the wheel hub.
The hub and drum will have to be removed as an assembly, once you get the Warn hub and wheel bearings off. The locking hub needs to be seperated as previously mentioned.
Resist the urge to pry on the drum, it will not seperate until you have the swage material from the wheel studs cut away; some folks try to just press them out and that will ruin both hub and drum.

Thanks all!

Tarry, you are right-on, there seems to be exactly what you describe, like gasket material there between the outer ring and the inner rings. That has to be what gets me into the snap ring. It will get a bit more persuasion. I have had all the screws and bolts out so that pulse perhaps some heat and more persuasion should do the trick.

Really appreciate all the help!

Hagar, thanks to you as well. Once I get them apart as a pair I will clean them up, wire wheel around the studs and the center and see if a long soak in my parts washer will help loosen things up.

:)Troy..........if those threads that the screw slotted bolt is in are just threaded at the cap only, I still believe that they are designed to have a longer threaded bold threaded in there that will bottom at the hub..........by screwing them in will lift the top portion of the hub off once the other end is bottomed...........take them out and stick a small probe in there an see how deep they go.........I would still put some heat on it to loosen that gasket maker up.
