Weber Carb

I am needing some help with a new Weber. I don't seem to be able to get any resolution from the supplier.
I have an 82 CJ7 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Rebuilt.
I have finally gotten the motor to run ok but it will not start without pumping the throttle about a hundred times or priming the carb when it is cold. No problem when it is warmed up. It does not seem to be getting enough squirt when you look into the carb and open the throttle, but when it is warm it accelerates ok. 22 in of vaccumn at idle, spraying everything while running shows no vacumn leaks. I have been into the carb several times. Did have to set the floats as the factory settings were way off. At this point I wish I had not bought it. Anyone out there with any experience would be a big help.

Hello Als Jeep and welcome!

I have never tuned a Weber but many here have, I'm pretty sure you'll get a few posts as soon as most of them get off of work...

I have a Weber on mine and I have the same type of problems, having to pump it to get it to start. That and it wanting to die tell it gets warm.

With that said I have a youngen that just bought a new one and I will have to tune it for him when it gets here in the next week or two. I will post up what I find when I start that project, that and get mine tuned up when I figure it out.

Than once I get that one working right I will take all that frustration and do mine.

I hope that some one jumps in with something before than.

How long have you had yours and where did you get it? I have sent mine in once. Got it back and it was not any better. They sent me another one and I am to send mine back. I had to take it apart and set the flotes correctly. Still will not start without priming. I am sending the one back and they said they would check it again. I got mine from Weber Carbs Direct on line. So far at least they seem to be trying. I had one about 8 or 9 years ago and it worked perfectly. If I get mine fixed I will post it. Anyone out there have any problem with old gas. I can pump the accelerator and see fuel on the runners in the manifold but it will not start. I can inject a small amout of fresh fuel into the carb with a syringe, about 1 1/2 or 2 ml. and it will start right up. If I get the jeep running it will do fine and will start well once it is warmed up. I bought the jeep last summer and have been working on it ever since. Never had this problem before so I am just looking for some feed back. there are no vacumn leaks, compression AMC 150 or better, vacumn at 22 in. New webber carb, which is another story, but it is pumping fuel out of the accelerator circuit in a good stream. I do not know how long the fuel has been in it. It has no particular odor but is a little orange when I get enough into a can to detect the difference in color. Really frustrating.

Not real familiar with the weber but it sounds more like a choke problem, or lack thereof. If the automatic choke doesn't work you can always rig a manual one. The AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is cold blooded and needs the choke at startup. Once warm they purr like a kitten.

holley makes a fuel pressure regulator, webers need to be regulated, my cj was hard to start even after warmup. it did not want to die when i would turn the switch off, and did not want to restart, so i would leave it running while on the trails. the reg. comes pre-set at 3 psi ( i think that is right) have not had a problem since i put this on......it still is cold natured but after warm-up starts and stops great......

I finally figured out what the problem was with my weber carb and it was not the carb. It was old gas. Never saw this before. The jeep would run once it was started and would start if the motor was hot but not if it cooled off any. It took me a lot of time on this one but now it starts with only 1 pump when it is cold. Gas is like me i guess, it sure ain't what it used to be. I bought this jeep with gas in it and drove it home so I never suspected the gas as the problem. Live and learn.

The first thing I did with my 83 was to ditch the Carter and buy a Webber. Im no expert in Carbs but have rebuilt many over the years. I actually got a re build kit for the Carter first and then after doing my homework I bit the bullet and picked up a Weber off E bay. This was the beginning of a month long adventure of the entire fuel system of the jeep. I wound up dropping the fuel tank and cleaning it out the best I could. Found out I have a 20 gallon polly tank and that was a nice hidden gift. I stuck a new sending unit in her and ran new stainless fuel line all the way to the fuel pump. I also ran a fuel filter off the tank and then stuck another under the hood after the pump. What I found was a combonation of issues. Bad gas,Trash in the tank,A rock ding on the fuel line that reduced flow. and a bad fuel pump dumping fuel into the crank case.

Basically just replaceing a carb may not fix the issues. But it will force someone to look beyond the carb and focus on the entire fuel system..

A fuel pressure regulator is a must have with a Weber as they function best between 2.5 and 4 PSI. If you are still running a Mechinacal fuel pump you may have as much as 9 PSI and will be flooding the system. The Holly regulator is the best bet at about 40 bux.. Good Luck!

I used to hear a lot of good about Weber carbs, but lately nothing has been good.. in particular Jeepers.. I also have the Weber on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and its the pits, so I'm changing it out this fall.. right now, its basically a new carb with maybe 40 miles on it, sitting in the garage in LV otherwise it would be gone now.. I'm in Washington for the summer.. so any recommendations as to a good "RELIABLE" carb I'm all ears..
