Two questions. What axles does a 80' CJ5 come with (Type and gearing) and how do I determine what gearing it is myself. I know I mark the driveshaft and tire and count rotations but I do not know what to do to determine the gearing from there.

Thanks for the help

The front axle should be a Dana 30 .
Now the back. You most likely have an AMC20 rear end. The cover is almost hemispherical. Like this:

But their is a chance the rear might be a Dana 44 like the pic below

Now the gear ratio could be any of the below:
3.07
3.31
3.54
3.73
4.11
4.56
4.88

A gear ratio of 4.11 means every time the drive shaft rotates 4.11 times the wheels turn once. That is IF both wheels are rotating the same speed.

Here's what you do: Put your TCase in neutral and lock your hubs. Lift one tire and rotate it twice. See how many time the drive shaft rotates. That is your ring and pinion gearing.

If you can't rotate the tire you have a locker and will have to lift both tires. In that case rotate the tires ONCE and watch the drive shaft. The number of rotations of the drive shaft is your gearing.

Excellent, thanks for the information!

The AMC20 rearend will have a code stamped in the housing on the right side of the face as you are looking at the diff. cover, where the axletube goes in. If you find it, it will tell you the gearing and whether you have an open diff. or factory Limited slip. (trac-loc).
