I know it's some form of bump stop but why is it on the spring and not the axle tube (there is one there already), I have these on both front corners but want to know what they do and if they are standard or aftermarket? Do I need them? can I remove them?

Your right, it's a bump stop and it is in the wrong place. It's a prior owner mod. The factory bumpstop is there (above the axle) but may need dropped to limit upward travel based on your shocks so they don't bottom out and bend the stem or break the mount.

Not in the wrong place, not a PO mod.

The intermediate 72-75 CJs have those in the front, in addition to the bump over the axle tube.

I've heard various theories on why they are there (to give a somewhat progressive spring rate, prevent spring inversion, etc.) but they are indeed stock, and many people end up removing them since they weren't used by the factory 76+ anyways.

I stand corrected. I'm more familiar with the late Jeeps.

They make as much sense as the bump stops that contacted the front diff to the right of the pinion yoke.

By the looks of the sticker on the leaf spring below it, it doesn't appear to have ever been used. I'd take it off.

That bump stop is to keep the weight of the snowplow from sagging the front to far on an intermediate.

You have a traditional bump directly over the axle tube. If you had a snowplow, the bottom bracket would be bolted right behind that for lack of a better term, sag protector. Snowplows are 500+ pounds with all the brackets, pump lights, etc and all the weight is on the front frame pushing down those springs. If you didnt have lifted springs, you would see how mucj closer that sag protector is to the spring pack. In any case, you dont need it. Feel free to remove.

My 75 has the same dual bumpstop setup and what looks like it was a snow plow mount.

Does anyone have any info on this setup. It looks like I have the 10 leaf pack in the front and the 9 leaf pack in the rear.
