Putting my steering column back together today. Hopefully it goes well. I was advised that I should grease these parts. What kind of grease should I use? I was just gonna use wheel bearing grease?

Bearing grease would work but will also collect junk. I’d clean it up really good and spray it with pure silicone lube.
Slippery, water & gunk resistant.

I use spray on white lithium grease.
Never had any issue.

Thanks. She’s all lubed up. Just having a hell of a time getting her back together. Got her almost done and installed the new lock cylinder. Well low and behold the key release wasn’t working. Took her back apart and shifted the ignition switch push rod back where it was supposed to go on the key release. Happy day. Right? Nope. Every time I turned the key to check everything the push rod would jump off the key releases. (FML). So tried again AND the ignition switch fell to pieces. Now I’m calling it a day for today and contemplating pulling the whole column to replace the ignition switch and get this thing back together.

So-I'm not the only one with that type of 'luck' then...
Hang in there-you'll get it done. :notworthy:

With me getting older and my memory not what it use to be when I do a column I have to do it all in one day so I don't forget how it goes back together. The last one I did was a '92 Cherokee that the four bolts had gotten loose so it wobbled.

That’s what was wrong with mine. I had to order new bearings so it had to wait to go back together. It’s not terrible except the damn key release thing. But now that the ignition switch fell to pieces I’m just gonna pull the column out. Hopefully it will be easier.

I wish you luck and hope you get it working in no time.

White lithium has always been my go to grease when nothing is specified.

This is why I love this forum...... just when I think I have cornered the market on crappy luck, I realize I'm not alone. Hang in there - you'll get it. Just look at your CJ like I do...... an inhouse, perpetual lesson on patience.

After reading this thread, I recall a recent one asking if any of us had named our Jeep's....... maybe I'll name mine "FML" LOL
