I have decided to buy a jeep for the first time. i used to drive my dads when i 16 but none since. i have several options in my buget but wanna buy one that has the best options for durability and option for upgrades an toys to add.

here are my choices i cant decide.

1979 CJ7 ! WITH A AMC 304 4-BARREL MOTOR! 3 SPEED WITH LOW GEARS! RUNS GREAT! COMES WITH: SKIRT, HARDTOP, METAL DOORS, MUD FLAP DOORS AND A 6"

1985 jeep CJ7 ,finished in LINER X,BEDLINER PAINT,black, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline 6,4-speed,4WD,soft top,brand new WARN LOCKING HUBS,cd,33" tires,chrome wheels,nice solid jeep

84 CJ7 Renegade Rebuilt AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline-6 and rebuilt 5-speed Transmission with hurst shifter. Done about 5 years ago. It has a hard top and full steel doors, but no soft top. Brand new 36'' BF Goodrich tires. Weber 2bbl carb. Body has some rust and has a very cold start to it.

1979 Jeep CJ7 Golden Eagle Levi (Edition) Edition AMC 304 , One Piece Moser Axles, Spool, 4.10 Gears, 4 in. Lift, Disconnect Sway Bar, Winch, 33in. Super Swampers. with rust in front finder and in rear tub.soft top but needs some repair to fabric

well the 84 should have the T-5 Transmission , i wouldn't buy it b/c of that. the reg. 79 sounds like a nice jeep to build off of. the 85 also sounds like a nice jeep but if i had to do it over again i'd go with the v8. now the other 79 would probably be the one i'd buy except for the spool that would have to go if you plan on driving on the road much. but really it don't sound like you could go wrong with any of em except for the 84. if you were to buy the 85 though, you would get the wide trac axles with it and most likely a T-176 tranny and Dana 300 Transfer Case , plus the inline 6 would get better mpg, and they run forever. ah hell who am i kiddin i'd buy the 85.

thanks i was kinda leaning towards the 85 its n better shape than the other three and at a dealer. so its not from a private party and have to wander what there not telling me. however it is 1000.00 more than the other three.

Keep looking. hunting season is not the time to buy a jeep.

i think you'd be happy with the 85. the 6cyl is a good motor. you might want a v8 down the road sometime, if you plan on going with huge tires, or doing alot of towing with it, but overall it has really has plenty. plus your getting some of the best drive train parts they used in the cj, with the exception of the T-18 they used in some of the older cjs.

well as soon as i saw Golden Eagle i was like great :D if it was me i would take the Golden Eagle but thats just me. but its got rust (very unfortunate) but try another model of Jeeps you found Good luck:cool:

I would try to stick to just the basics and pay no atenention to the fact that it was rhinolined, has new tires or all the other filler. V8's sound really cool but depending on how you will use it may be unnessesary, I would define my parameters and then find the least molested example that fits that discription. What my perfect CJ is may not be yours so define your needs. Paying up front for a better suited Jeep may save much more in the end.
To pick one from your list would require me to see them first because condition rates higher to me than any equipment list. Besides that they are all 7's and no 5's. ;)

Keep Looking till you find a good CJ5 .:)

Thanks for the advice so far. I want a CJ7 for the extra room in the back no disrespect to the CJ5 owners but isint that the ony differance. I need your advice again this is the jeep im going to look at on sunday. i also added it as my profile pic because i wanted to put a photo of it on here but i couldnt figure out any other way to do it. any thoughts?

My advise to anyone looking at any CJ to buy is to spend as much time under it as you do looking at the finish and interior and engine, or more. If you are not comfortable laying on the ground or were ever it may sit bring a tarp or whatever so you can lay on your back and look over things under it. Inspect for tub rust in the floor and fender wells, oil leaks, bent and broken things, look at the U bolts on the springs, etc. anything that may show how it was treated and what you may be in for in repairs once you become the owner if that happens. All that said these are vintage machines and very few are gona be perfect but at least know what you are getting into a little.

That is very good advice. I take my creeper to all vehicle purchases as it makes it easier to slide around for under body inspection. I also have turned down several jeeps so far as to major rust damage. i can deal with a little but there becomes a point of how much am i going to spend to fix the body damage VS what there asking for the vehicle.

thanks for all the help i bought this today.
