So I just picked up a Dana 30 and AMC20 with 4.10s. The front has a Detroit Truetrac and the rear has the OEM style Trac-lok. I am doing a skyjacker 4 inch suspension lift, with hydro shocks, but I was curious as to what size tires you guys thought I should be running with that gearing. This is a street/trail jeep that will rarely, if ever, go on the highway. I was looking at either 33s or 35s. I am just looking for your experience with those tire sizes. Pics would also be great. I was going to just go with 33s but I don't want my jeep to be crazy revy. The jeep now has 31s with 2.73s for gears so this will be a big difference from what I am used to.

Specs:

I-6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l
Dana 300
T-176

I will be getting goodyear Duratracs. The AMC will be getting superior one piece axles and the tubes will be welded.

Thanks for the help. :chug:

I'd go with the 33's, 35's open up a whole new can of worms.

Gonna 2nd what Old Dog said. 4.10s are good with 33s. If you were wanting to run 35s it'll take more lift and cutting the body. And for a Jeep on 35s your ratio should be in the 4.56 to 4.88 range in my opinion.

My CJ5 had a 360 / T-150 / Dana 20 with 33s and 4.10s. Absolutely loved it. While I had the V-8 your Transmission and Transfer Case have better gearing. I think you'll be happy with 33s.

Thanks for the replies. :chug:

Now I have to decide on if I want to get 33x12.5 or 33x10.5. I am sold on the duratracs though so at least that decision has been made. Thanks again.

FWIW 10.50's will put less strane in the steering componets. But will sink deeper in the mud.

I'm using 33/12.5/15 on the same setup that u have. At 65mph its about 2800 but I don't do much interstate driving I can take normal highways and run 55 and it run about 2400. I had 33s and 2.73s when I finealy got my 4.10's boy was it a big differance. Imo I would get rid of the trac-loc when ever you can I hear it sucks.

Not to rain on your parade but concider the trac-loc as an open carrier that will not accept a lunchbox type locker. My CJ5 had one and was worthless, they are reported to wear out very quickly.

Thanks. The Duratracs aren't even offered 10.5. Just 33x12.5, from what I just learned. I did see that the KM2s could be had in 33x10.5, so there is that option. I am still leaning towards the duratracs though, so that would mean 12.5.

That is good to know about the 4.10s. I think I will be pretty happy with 33s and 4.10s. I don't, at this point, think it would be a good idea to run a bigger tire for what I do. 35s would be cool, but would also require more work than I was interested in investing in to this jeep.

I agree with both of you on the Trac-lok. It really is nothing special. If I get anything for the AMC20 it will be a detroit truetrac. A gear driven LSD. A much better solution than a real locker because of how I use my Jeep.

The detroit truetrac in my opinion is the best Limited slip out there gear driven no clutchs to wear out no additives to add to the diff oil, and if you do run into a little trouble apply the brakes a little and this should get you though, this is a tip I learned on this site. Of course the Limited slip isn't as good as a selectable locker but its is cheaper and should get you were you want to go. I have the truetac in both the AMC20 and Dana 30 and so far I love them. I haven't tried them on snow and ice yet but I think with a little throttle feathering they shouldn't be to bad I could be wroung.:):chug:

Thanks for the reply. If I do anything it will be the detroit truetrac LSD. But, I already have a lot of money to spend before getting there. The lift I want, plus tires, gets me well over what I spent to get the Jeep in the first place, haha. I am thinking Skyjacker 4 inch with bilstein shocks.

I am still undecided on tires though. I think that since this is really just a toy, I might as well get some badass tires. Now I am thinking of getting the KM2s or MTRs. But, the MTRs only come in 12.5. So I will be making up my mind with the flip of a coin. I am shooting for late spring to get this project done.

Thanks for the help guys. :chug:

The Duratracs are among the lightest in weight so you will have better braking and acceleration performance plus slightly higher gas mileage. These are my next tire on the list for my CJ8 .

I have the same drive train as you with 4.10's and 33x12.5 BFG KM's 2.5'' lift. its a great combo, I have also ran it 35's in the past with minor rubbing but no power issues. When the weather is good I daily drive my CJ and 60mph on the highway.
I went with 12.5'' for the sidewall and tread width. In most cases a 12.5'' tire only has a 10'' tread width. On an 8'' wheel when aired down thats when you will benefit from that little extra width. I don't believe that the difference between a 12.5 and 10.5 will have any affect on component stain.

Here's the last version of my CJ with 2.5'' lift 33x12.5 KM's, 15''x8'' 3.75'' back space Procomp wheels.

Agreed. 12.5's are a good width. I ran 33x12.5x15 TSL radials on my CJ for several years. The nice thing is the 12.5's suck into an 8" rim nicely...beneficial for airing down as they will keep the bead better... and also preventing rock damage to the rim.

As was said, most 12.5's will measure around 10 inches at the tread. My 36x12.5 biasply TSL's measure about that.

33x12.5's on 4" lift springs...and some fender cutting.

36x12.5's...same amount of lift.

If your still looking for the right tire jp magazine March 2012 issue has a good right up on about 30 differant tires alot of good info. I have duratracs on my jeep and I like them alot. Imo 4.10 and 33/12.5/ tires and a 4" lift are a great match. :)
