I just bought an '83 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 4 spd. I am trying to identify which Transmission I have but I can't seem to find any reference to a 4 spd where reverse is to the left and up by 1st. I am going to crawl back under there tonight, is there something I can be specifically looking for. I am already ging to have printed out the info provided in the Transmission post in the "Comprehensive Database" section of the forum. Excellent section by the way, especially for a noobie like me.

thanks

It's not going to be a T-4 from Borg Warner or the T-176 from Tremec, typically the 2 factory offerings for 80's era Jeeps. Both of those have reverse to the right and down. It could be the Borg Warner SR4 but I'm not sure of it's shift pattern. It should have an embossed name on the side of it along with some casting numbers. What Transfer Case is used with it? What shape is the shifter cane (straight or curved)?

edit: I found this comment about President Reagan's 83 Scrambler so I'd guess this could be what you have.
"We weren't allowed to open the hood or climb inside, but mechanically the Scrambler sports a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l six-cylinder backed by a Borg Warner SR4 four-speed manual Transmission . Seeing the weird SR4 shift pattern with its "left-and-up" Reverse on the Transmission shifter knob came as something of a surprise to us, but the Scrambler experts at Collins Bros Jeep assured us that it's not unheard of to find the SR4 behind the six-cylinder."

Reverse is up near 1st on a SR4 . I believe you have to push in for reverse as well, but I've never owned one too new for me.

Casting should be 13-32

It is a SR4 . It is probably going to need some attention because there is nothing to keep it from going into reverse instead of first. If it has a reverse lock out it aint working. For a light duty second vehicle I guess the question is do I just get the SR4 rebuilt or go ahead and try to find a sturdier more reliable Transmission . Are there any of the more desirable Transmission that are just swap and bolt up or does everything require adapters and/or fabbing? I am not doing anything in the near future just want to gathering info. FYI I do have the Dana 300 .

Thanks for the help

You should see if you can find a T-176 that is what it had from the factory and is a very strong Transmission .

You will probably need the bellhousing also but the came stock in alot of CJs so it should't be to hard to find used. Like I said that is what yours had originally.

The only way to know for sure is to check the vin it could have been the T-4 , T-5 , or T-176 .

There is a better chance it originally came from the factory with a T-4 or T-5 both are the same exact length as a SR4 , The T-176 is 2+” shorter (read driveshaft).

The T-4 , T-5 came stock from 82-86 6cyl

The T-176 was an option from 81-86, standard in 80 behind a the AMC 304

From my charts you should have a Tremec T-176 4-sp; 1982-1983 All models with 6/AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l

I show the same thing and I had a '83 CJ5 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and T-176 .

You’re getting your CJ5 ’s and CJ7 ’s confused.

The original poster has a CJ7

The T-4 , T-5 , and SR4 never came from the factory in a CJ5 6cyl because their too long a tranny for the shorter wheel base 5. The CJ5 6 cyl came with the T-176

The CJ7 6 cyl came from the factory with the T-4 , T-5 , and T-176 /177
