Hello all, I am not sure if this is the correct thread to post this question but I am sure someone will let me know.

I have a 1960 CJ5 jeep willys. It is all stock with NO lifts. I want to replace the original 16" split rims and tube tires. I do not want to lift it (at least not in the near future) but I would like to get a good size wheel & tire. I am considering a new wheel size of 15"X8" and a new tire size of 30"X9.5" in a mud terrain or at least good on / off road tire. Any suggestions? Can I go to a bigger diameter without having to lift?

Keep in mind I still have manual steering

Thanks.

You don't have to change to 15" rims.
16" rims are very popular again with a large selection of rubber for them.
That said, your previously stated tire size works on a stock CJ2a .

Thanks! Do you think I can go bigger on the tire size? maybe 31"x10.5?

Is it me or are you posting the same question in another category?
AND are you aware that your 16" "split rim" is possibly the military combat wheel? Are they bolted together one half to the other?

Yes I am new to this forum and didn't know what catagory to put my post. I will have to check but I don't recall seeing two halfs bolted together. Is that a rare wheel?

It's possible, but without power steering the bigger tires start working the arms more & more.;)

that's what I am affraid of. I already have very hard steering. I will probably be repair some or all of my steering linkage soon. I am assuming the wider the tire the harder to steer, correct? I just don't want dinky tires in a small wheel well.

Rodger that, over.;)

Well when you say 16" split rim the only Jeep wheel it could be is the 16" combat wheel that is bolted together in halves, yes they are rare and would sell for approx $250 each.
The other scenario is they are normal 16" cj wheels and good news again but only worth $100+ each if good.
16" splt rim wheels were not used on CJ's so it's worth figureing out.
As far as mounting bigger tires on those wheels, IF they are Jeep equiped wheels they may only be 4.5" wide and not wide enough to install larger size tires than what it came with.

sorry for the duplicate post. - will not happen again:(

The rims are probably standard 4.5" cj rims. They just looked like split rims - the kind that no one wants to mount tires on because they are too dangerous. One is actually rusted through around the valve stem.

Thanks for all your great feedback!

Well none the less, if even one is good you could post it for sale on Ebay, earlycj5, willys tech or ? and recoup something towards the new ones?
16's are still sought after by some.

I was just wondering about the axle. Is a 31"X9.5x15"(or 16") going to put too much strain on my stock axle?

Are we talking beadlocks?
Some military 2 piece wheels are bead locks that lock both beads (inner and outer)

no definately not beadlocks. I just thought they were split rims by the look of them. I think they are standard cj 16's

what is too big for the stock axle and stock manual steering?

Please fill out your profile so it's easier to find out what jeep we are talking about.
Your CJ has a good rear axle but the front is the limiting factor. I wouldn't go bigger than 33 or 34 inches.

They are known as "combat" wheels and not possitive if they only came on MB's or M38's and maybe M38a1's.
