Where can I find a factory or factory like oil dipstick . I dont need the tube or the kits that they are selling with a new tube and dipstick( which is different than OEM length). My dipstick tube is fine. I just want the factory dipstick itself? New or used idk. PO of my jeep cut off stick that is not a jeep stick and there are no add or full marks on it. And yes I can completely drain oil and put on new filter and new oil and mark this stick i got , but there is so much contradiction as to 5, 5.5 or 6 quarts oil needed in a 1983 stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l :censored: , I dont know what the right answer is. Cause I dont want to be a quart over or a quart under. would rather just have the right dipstick in it. :D

I'd check the junk yards or local 4x4 shops that might have an old engine laying around.

hek this part NC cj jeep are like gold. None in junyards round here. People pay $1500-$2000 for a cj grown up roof high in briars, rusted to ground. :D

Man, I have looked and looked - I can only find the tube. If you find out, tell me so I know - sometimes my OCD gets the best of me.....

Brother I have looked and looked to lol. They ain't such critter for sale. If anybody reading this finds one ill mail ya tha frog skins for it . Just needs to be for 83 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l stock oil pan. I thought one of the Sr. like "old dog" would have found me one by now

:D......not calling anybody old ...like old man old

I wish someone would post exact measurements of stock stick....great idea....I looked I.to that once and found replys from 19" - 22" with every 1/4" in between......somebody give me to right answer....and then somebody second it :)

Does the '83 take the long one(2' or so), or the short one(maybe a foot)?

Idk tin....can't find real one to compare to

Does it come straight out of the block, or come out of the block and then follow the valve cover up to the front of the engine?

The reason I ask is, my 81 has the short one, but the 84 block that I have, has the long one. I'm not sure if 84 is the first year for the longer tube, or if it would have come out sooner.

Dudley great pic....But mine is the short one...no curve to tube....straight up out of block.....anybody got pic of the short one like dudley pic of the long one ... i need pic of where the add & full marks are to......THANKS :notworthy:

And hey Dudley , watch that heater core hose rubbing against top of alternator :D ...thats a future :censored: waiting to happen

@CJB4 thanks for the heads up....that's one of my to do's. She's in pretty rough shape. Some how the PO managed to cut and wirenut almost every wire under the hood, but never pulled off a nutter!

My dipstick & tube don't look like Dudley's.

It'll be a few days before I'm near my Jeep again.

If no one beats me to it, I'll post pictures of the installed position and of the whole stick next to a tape measure.

please do :D

I see no one beat me to it.

First, the pictures:

Installed Position: between the firewall and distributor, below the valve cover, under cylinder 2

The full length

distance between "full" and "add"

The zig zag portion of the stick, below the handle and above the part number

The part number is 3237515. There is an "M" stamped on it not far from the part number.

I used google.com to search for the part number.

The search lead me to a website, NSN-Now

The specs on nsn-now are:

Ok, it's time for the caveat(s).

The paper grid in each photo is composed of 1/8th inch squares (graph paper). I did this to help the person looking at the pictures figure out about how far things are apart from one another.

Edit: This is the first time I've posted pictures, I think, and "post preview" is showing me thumbnail images which, when clicked, get "big."

My stick - like all other dipsticks I've seen - is bent.

I was tired when I took these photos.

As I was nodding off, I realized I should have used a C-clamp to flatten out the material and I should have looked harder for a decent tape-measure. Looking at the last photo, the spec says 12.46 inches in length, which looks right to my eye.

Anyway, I hope my efforts help.

One more thing: The pictures don't depict the serious arc along the length of the dipstick.

If I'd had pushed it flat, it would have been about 12.5" in total length between the seal at the base of the handle and the tip of the measuring staff.
