in converting drum to disc, where do i get them. I hear i can go to the junk yard and pull of a chevy, is this true?if so what year and is it bolt on bolt off? or is welding involved?? if i want to stay away from welding anything do i have to get a conversion kit online?? if so any suggestions??

Easiest is find a 76-77 with a Dana 30 6 bolt caliper mount. They are getting harder to find now. They bolt on to the spindle studs. You can use a 77 and up if you swap out the knuckles. They have a 2 bolt caliper mount You'll need a new master cylinder too. Well worth the upgrade.

get the spindles and the hubs
the spindles for a disc and a drum take different inner bearings so you want the set to match
besides that, if you have a standard drum brake 73 d 30, you can order the disc conversion from Herm The Overdrive Guy for the D25/27. it will bolt on direct to the d 30 with drum brakes and use GM truck disc.
Remember when you do the conversion to set your MC up for disc

is there any advantage to swaping out the knuckles?? My goal is to make my cj a daily driver, right now it seems more like a death cage. I figure to start with the brakes, but keeping my longterm goal in mind what would be the best route to go??

Good site Baja!

Yes you do need spindles, but I don't see them in his kit?

Rex: PM me. I have a full 76 Dana 30 axle set up for less than half. Also have a Detroit Tru-Trac for big gears cheap.

Only reason to swap out the knuckles is to be able to use the 77 and up 2 bolt caliper mounts. The caliper mounts on the knuckle bosses that just aren't there on the earlier axles. Not really that tough a job. All depends what you can find a donor axle for. When you swap out the knuckles it's a good time to check the ball joints out.

6 bolt caliper brackets are getting pretty hard to find since they only put them on 76 and early 77 CJs.

Some guys will just swap in the whole axle, but make sure the gear ratio is the same. You should rebuild it any way. I like to know what shape things are in if I'm driving it.

Disc brakes will really bring your CJ into the real world of stopping. Much better in mud and water too.

That kit makes compensation for the different spindles he supplies the inner races and bearings for the drum spindles.
