1977 CJ7 304 V8 3 spd, D20TC, D30, AMC20, fiberglass tub, Edelbrock performer intake, terrible Carter AFB carb.
2010 Toyota Tundra 5.7, SR5, TRD, reg cab, short bed, stock.
I've got a '77 CJ7 , AMC 304 V8, 3 spd, p/s, fiberglass tub. I have manual drum brakes at all 4 corners. I've located a front disk brake conversion kit for $500.00, and a power booster/master cylinder kit for $250.00. Can't afford to do both at the same time. Which component/system will yield the most significant and noticible improvement in braking? I plan on installing both eventually, just can't do both at once. Thanks in advance for your comments & info.

Find a narrow track Dana 30 front that already has disc brakes for $100-$AMC 150 . Bolt it in or swap the parts over. Get a M/C, proportioning valve, & booster for $75-$100 maybe from the same donor even. Bolt on. Throw in $100 for hoses, fluids, new pads, and having the rotors turned and call it a day. That would be the best bang for the buck.

The used prices were taken from current or recent CL ads in my area...

Thanks Inc for responding. I think, if I lived in a more populated area, and less rural, I'd have a chance at locating those parts & great prices. I have to agree that would be the "best-bang-for-the-buck". Focusing on what parts I can locate on the internet, I'm guessing the front disk brakes conversion kit would give me the biggest improvement. I'm just guessing.

:)Bad:

Front Disc's would be the way to go................the Master Cylinder should be OK with the front Disc's you would need to add the correct proportioning valve.
All of the Jeep brake stuff was mostly basic GM / Chevy 1/2-3/4 ton brake stuff installed on the Dana 30 axle.............$500 seems on the high side..... do some research and shopping.

Tarry99,

Thanks for the response. $500.00 thus far has been the cheapest "brand new" conversion kit that I could locate (the "Jeep Guy"). Some kits exceed $1000.00.

:)Does that come with new wheel hubs for the disc's? The caliper and the rotors are pretty cheap in the aftermarket.

Yes, that includes hubs, seals, races, rotors, calipers loaded with pads, brake hoses, I think everthing but new bearings. Check/google: the-jeep-guy.com

:)Bad,

Hey.................. If that's working for you have add it. It is nice to get a kit that has all of the stuff in one place...............Who said? time is money!

I too was looking for better braking; got a good deal on the SSBC brake kit and installed it. Also running the dual BB with 1 1/8" MC. Still evaluating the setup; but it's better than stock for sure.

I'd recommend the brake kit first.

But the other post regarding the swap on Dana 30 also makes good "cents".

good luck!

Wish I could locate a cheap set of wide track Dana 44 axles; but for right now I'm satisfied with my stock setup. I'm not doing any "tough" four wheeling, just street, sand dunes and maybe a little mud. I think I will be very happy with good brakes & steering. Thanks!
