I want to go ahead and replace my stock Monroe stabilizer. I was reading that as far as suspension shocks go hydro are better because they aren't as stiff so they make the ride better. I can dig that...so would the opposite be true for steering stabilizers? I want to try to combat some of the wander I have inherited with my recent lift until I get around to shining the axles and correction my geometry?

Hydro or gas steering stabilizer?

You kinda answered your own question. Using a stabalizer to counteract bad steering geometry is asking for trouble. But if you choose do so I would use a quality one from one of the prominent names in the suspension industry.

Not sure what a "hydro" shock or stabilizer is. Are you referring to gas charged as opposed to oil dampened?

BTW - No CJ's from the factory came with steering stabilizers. They were / have been added because of the changes that WE owners have done to our vehicles. :)

Well I was more asking whether to get gas or hydro not brand... Would the same concepts of suspension shocks apply to the steering stabilizer? Would a gas shock make the steering feel tighter than a hydro? Or is hydro a better choice

I know this has been debated before but I think along with some others that a steering stabilizer will not solve any steering problems. I went through the whole proccess of getting my ill handling Jeep to steer right and a steering stabilizer made no diferance in wandering, It did not steer right untill I addressed the loose or worn ball joints, corrected the caster and set the toe. I currently do not run one at all.
Just my 2c.:D

I was editing my post when you replied.

Let me know if you have more questions after reading my edited reply. :)

I cannot answer that question, sorry... I used a stabilizer on my CJ, but only after my steering was correctly adjusted.

I never used a stabilizer to mask a steering problem. Probably not what you want to read, but that is my thought.

I agree with everyone else, fix the steering.
A stabilizer should be called a shock, as it is intender
to take out some of the shock in the steering when you hit
a hole or rock, so the steering wheel doesn't take your thumb off.

Well yes I mean oil or gas. I find it hard to believe that the stabilizer has no affect on the steering handling but you guys know more than me so I will believe you..... I obviously am not using this to correct my geometry because I said I was playing to shim the axles. I just haven't done enough research to know how to fix that yet....

I have to challenge you on the stabilizer I am fairly certain it was part of the CJ7 Limited package but I can check that when I get home.

But that what I am talking about when I hit a bump it's a little challenging to keep the wheel straight albeit doesnt rip my thumbs off

I researched our Docs section under the Master Parts Catalogs and found a steering stabilizer for the year you are talking about.
Not sure if it's a CJ or truck or what? :)

Irregardless. I still stand by my original thoughts, no stabilizer until you correct your geometry problem. :(

But, per your question - hydro - they are better suited for steering work :)

The top one with the larger plate is from an fsj. I recognize the plate it sandwiches between the perch and the spring plate and the u bolt bolts through it.

So can't have my desert till I eat my peas huh?
