well i think i have an odd one for you guys. on cold days all is well, on warm days oh boy what fun i have. the steering gets sticky spots in it (only when its warm outside, and not all the time) i mean it kinda catches and is hard to turn some times in one direction, then in both directions. i put a new steering box on it about 2yrs ago, it has new shocks, everything is tight, and the sway bar is connected. The only thing i haven't replace is the steering stabilizer, think that could be it? i have tightened and loosened the steering box in an attempt to solve it but no dice. i guess i'll be replacing the stabilizer soon. any other suggestions?

Have you checked your ball joints? (I have no idea why the weateher would change this though)
Take the stabilizer off and see if it changes. I haven't run one in years.

If you suspect the steering stabiliser don't spend money replacing it until you try driving without it. You shouldn't need it and getting rid of it for the time being will tell you if that's where the problem is.

Is is power steering? Could the belt be expanding in warm WX and slipping, causing the PS pressure to drift on and off?

ball joints don't have any play in em and i keep everything greased. yeah trying to figure out what the weather has to do with it is screwing me up. maybe its changing the way the fluid is reacting in the steering stabilizer, i don't know. but it'll come off tomorrow.

nope its manual steering for now.

I just remembered that someone a while back had a problem like that, and it turned out he had a bad axle u-joint. Might want to check that also.

:dunno:

Had a similar problem last spring, but temperature didn't seem to be a factor. The bearing in the column was binding occasionally. Replaced the column (other issues), and no more problem.

take a look at the "U joint" down at the steering box.

well i didn't get to mess with it yesterday had to go to a funeral, so today i'll be under the jeep looking it over.

Been awhile, did you ever find anything.

Well I took the steering stabilizer off no help, greased everything again no help, checked the joints in the steering shaft nothing, axle u joint got greased and checked they aren't in the best shape but look ok, I've come to the conclusion its gotta be in the steering box. So I guess ill live with it untill I can convert it over to power. Its not really dangerous, just more of an annoyance. Im gonna put u joints in it soon to. There's a guy south of here (I've mentioned him before) that parts out jeeps, he sells the complete power setup for $250. That's where im at with it, unfortunatel. Crappy thing is, that steering box is 2yrs old and I paid right at $200 for it, if I would have known about the parts guy earlier that $200 would been a whole lot better spent. Thanks for the help on this one guys.

i have power steering on mine and had this problem. the steering colum was binding up as it went in to teh firewall/tub. do u a plate that comes off the tub at an angle to keep the colum from slipping upward. it holds the u joint down as well. just depend on the yr and model, as soon as we put a spacer on the colum to keep the joint off teh angle plate coming off the tub, problem solved, my colum quite jumping out of the steering box as well. the power steering is nice but if u plan on putting power steering on ur jeep, drive one with it first and go with a newer style power steering. thed older one are very touchy. but it depends on what kinda driver it is, mine is an every day drive and cruz down the freeway at 70-80mph, u just have to get used to the steering, my dads is manuel steering and refuses to drive mine due to how sensitive it is. responds to the littleest touch. jusat to let know.

did you check the belt tension as suggested earlier on? I had a similar problem and it did turn out to be belt slipping causing sudden heavy steering...

Manual steering

Sounds like you've covered all the bases down low besides the steering box. Are you sure it's in the front end, or could something be binding in your steering column?
