Talking with the neighborhood mechanic and he mentioned putting YJ springs on my CJ to make it ride smoother. It did spark some interest, but is it really worth it?

Is it true that the wider the spring leaf the smoother the ride? Is doing this really taking away from what is a CJ?

It never really bother me before, but since he's mentioned it to me I've had this thought in my head. Anyway, thought I'd ask the forum to see what you thought;)

Thanks in advnce:D

i don't know if this is true, but im doing this on mine because 1. the previous springs are done, and 2. i can get a inexpensive (cheap) set of yj springs

Ride harshness is due to a high spring rate (#/")

What I gained was a more stabile ride on the road.

It is a bunch of work, but I'd do it again. :D

I went with OME springs when I did mine. Got 3" of lift and a better ride in the process. Well worth it! :chug:

I hope so! I've never read that it didn't and I've got 4 OME springs setting on the floor waiting for reassembly of the Jeep. I'll let you know in 6-8 months (hopefully)

I have quite a few wheelin budies who have gone YJ springs.
In most cases they aquired Stock YJ springs and did a spring over on their CJ's. The ride was softer but they did not feel more stable. The stock springs in the spring over were very flexy and caused a lot of axle wrap. This caused things to brake more and myself to spend more time under their rigs on trails than in my seat enjoying the trail.
One friend has recently done a YJ lift spring under with shackle reversal on his 80' CJ5 . Going from used lift springs to new yj lift springs. It is not softer. His axle width is still the same and were his springs attach to his axles are in the same place.
I myself have not seen the benefit of the YJ conversion on CJ's that have a wider leaf to start with.
Just my experience.

Thats what its all about. You can change out to Yj springs with a high spring rate and ride like a buckboard anyway. You will gain a little more stability with the spring being wider but if its that stiffly sprung it wont really matter.

I have only ever heard good things about the OME springs. The only negative Ive heard is that you cant get them with a true 4 in lift. The reason for that is cause it would compromise the handling of the OME spring itself. In a world where everyone is trying to grab cash any way they can I see that as a company with integrity. If they just threw out some 4 in springs people would be all over it.

From the sounds of it, just might as well leave well enough alone....like I said, the ride never really bothered me anyway, it's part of jeep life;). there are other things that I would rather update.

leaf springs are in good condition for now, so we'll will ride until we need to cross that bridge;)

thanks for the input...spring has sprung and sunny days are upon us here is Houston, some of the best weather to enjoy the rides!

Make it a good day!

OME doesn't care about total height. They are more concerned with flex and ride quality since they typically do not rock crawl over in Australia. I read a few articles about their philosophy and it makes sence.

I know I certainly would jump on an OME 4in lift w/ cj to yj spring conversion. In a heartbeat

Yeah, me too. But if you consider the 2.5 OEM springs, along with the Rocky Road hangars that look to gain you another 1/2 inch and then go with a 1' body lift your there.

That's what I intend to do shortly. Depending on how the 33's fit will determine if I need the 1' body lift. Hopefully I won't need it.
