I have looked at 2 CJ5 's. One is a 1962 and the other a '70. Going to put a 4.3 v6 in it, Im sure of that. I'd like to put a vortec in it but am open to tbi or carb. How difficult is the vortec to install into an older jeep if I have the wiring harness for the vortec? Also what tranny should I use behind the v6? Id like to use it as my daily driver and would like a highway gear or Overdrive but also to be used as a hunting rig. I would keep the Dana 18 Transfer Case . Also, what mileage might I get with the 4.3?
Thanks

It doesn't take that much to do a Vortec. it's all the little stuff that will empty your wallet. CJ5 's are short, so that leaves out the 700R4 or 4L60. So that leaves the granny four speeds. A adapter to the D18 will cost you $500+. Might be able to find a T-18 /Dana 20 combo.

Another option is the AX-15, but an adapter to the Dana 18 is almost $700.

Milage is unknown, as there are very many factors involved.

:)Packer,

If your going with a Chevy motor best to stay with a Chevy or GM based Transmission to keep the Bell Housing and clutch simple. Any of the GM 4 Speed granny low transmissions will bolt up to a Dana 18 Transfer Case with an adapter.
Because of the rear mounted distributor you will have to move the motor forward a little which may mean changing the radiator location by a few inches.
The later Fuel injected motors may require a pump in the tank which may not work since the early CJ's like you have mentioned have tanks under the drivers seat unless someone has moved them. Although there are some aftermarket external high pressure pumps that may work with a return line.
Taking a stock harness and trying to use it can be done but may be a hassle........the aftermarket ones are purpose built for your application with just the plugs , wires & things you need.
