Winch has a Ghost

Rigged up a gin pole truck. Took the winch off another older gin truck.
Ramsey 10 or 12 K winch. Rigged up the winch. Runs like a charm.
We were changing out a diesel engine in a old work truck. Pulled engine and set down. Hooked the
tail-hook and tighened up the slack out of the line. Truck was off.
WINCH WAS OFF. We using a two way toggle switch ...
Worked around the truck for about another 15 minutes. Nothing.
Then, we went to town to get some parts, returned and sometime while we were gone. Winch "kicked" itself on and unwound cable until it got tangled up and must have choked itself down. Think it was the silinoid done it, that is a guess. But we pushed the toggle switch on way, would barely turn, none the other way. Think it might have burned up the motor. Hope it didn't hurt the gears or the winch itself. Any ideas.
We were in the process of putting a master cutt off switch on the machine this evening. Should of done it before the first lift ...
Any suggestions what could have went wrong.
