im curious if anyone has used synthetic winch rope. the cable on my winch is junk. i have heard good and bad things about synthetic rope and was wanting some honest opinions.

IMO, a lot depends on what you do with it. I've used mine more on the ranch than I have getting unstuck. Wire rope seems to be more useful to me. My buddies that are serious rockcrawlers swear by it.

Rope for me. Had a bad experience with a cable (mostly operator error - not me) and have really liked the pull of a rope.

Use rope on mine also. Have used cable in the past, but since using rope, will never switch back.

I'm runnin steel right now, but only because I'm too lazy to swap to the coil of syn line I have. I do NOT like steel cable one bit.

Rope all the way, Lighter and way less dangerous. Almost everyone in our club has switched over to rope, no one has been sorry for doing so.
I should add they do get used :)

thanks for the input. previous owner of my jeep got a little careless winding the cable and smashed it in a few spots. looks like ill be ordering some 3/8 rope for it.

I use 5/16 line, 3/8 may be overkill for a Jeep. Here's a link to the line I use, At 130 bucks, shipped, It's WAY cheaper, and is made from the same dyneema material as the very $$$$$ name brand lines. You can buy 2 of these for the price of one Amsteel or Viking line. You can add a little life to it by going to a hyd. hose place, and buying a few feet of chafe guard, and sliding it over the line before installing it.

with your build I think your rig will get a work out. I would go with the 3/8 like you said. Breaking a winch line is not good if you are in a dangerous place like pulling up a waterfall. If your winch came with 100' of cable it will only hold 80' of 3/8 line.
