Hello All, yes I have a carter carb idle issue. wont idle at all, can start, runs fine when given gas from the excelerator. cant get out fast enough to adjust anything. have run thru the vac lines and I think I got them all correct. The smog stuff is gone, but I have the factory air cleaner housing. Have squirted carb cleaner all over so I don't think there is a vac leak. I can keep it running by trigging the throttle. the carb is old might have to do a rebuild. Have both a mach. fuel pump and a low flow elec.
when it cold will the elec choke close the choke without the engine running?
it stays open as far as I can see
any ideas?

Sounds like you might have clogged idle tubes which is a common issue. They can be drilled out with a 1/32" drill. There are also sites on the net that can provide more detail. The choke spring might need replacing since it does'nt open or just might need adjusting.

Hi Torxhead, I did try the fix for the idle tubes, didnt drill them out just sprayed carb cleaner down thru them.

looking at the pics on the previous post do I have a bbd or a yf carb?

You are missing several of your hoses. Have you done a nutter bypass on this?

I dont know what that is but the PO might have.

Here is a diagram of the carb and what each port is for.| Repair Guides | Idle Speed And Mixture | Feedback Carburetors | AutoZone.com

scroll down to Carter BBD 1980-1983 for your jeep. Just looking at it, you are missing some key hoses and also it kinda looks like your fuel return off your fuel filter dumps between the header...hopefully it is hooked to a tube that I can't see from the pic, but that could be a problem.

Ok I checked out the link and I will retrace all the hoses tomarrow night.
the fuel return does go back to the tank no worries.
as far as the Nutter bypass I believe I have a 1980 so I wouldnt need to do this right? there is not a stepper motor on the carb and I dont believe it has a mcu

Well with the nutter bypass you can get rid of much of the emissions stuff, but if they haven't done that and just disconnected a bunch of your emissions hoses it will cause your Carb to run like dodo. So that would be where I would start. It may be easier for you to just do the nutter bypass yourself (just search it there are lots of good links on how to do it here on Jeep-CJ).

yeah previous stated.. it looks to missing some hoses off the throttle body plate of the carb.. also.. as far as the choke plate.. it should close when you depress the trottle when the engine is cold. if not A)its out of adjustment B)the electric element is bad. that should get you started. the carb cleaner trick only works when its running.. hope this gives some direction:chug:

I have the same problem every few months. Put the nozzle extender of a can of carb cleaner against the holes in the brass screws (looking down into the throat) & spray while it's running. That usually clears mine out.

Well I rebuilt the carb and now It start at all. so the story goes on
will play with it again tonight and hope for the best

Ok so I rebuilt the carb, put a manual choke on, and removed all but the dist vacumn line. and she works!! idles very nicely
seems I had to put the idle mix screws out to about 4 turns any less and she wont idle worth a damn
so thank you all who helped out
:chug:

Excellent! Glad you got it running. The good thing about these things are the more you work on them the better you get at fixing um the next time.
