Has anyone used a YJ gas tank in a CJ? There doesn't seem to be much info out there. I ask because I now have a YJ tube and like the filler neck on the drivers side, and i need a new gas tank anyway.

Yes it is a direct bolt in. Like you said you have the filler neck on the drivers side so you would have to decide if you want to cut your tub. The good thing is you can find a larger tank and in polyurethane so you dont have to worry about rusting.

My cj tank measures 23x16x10 my stock yj tank measures 33x17x12 I have a yj tub on a cj frame (fuel hole on the left) had to use the cj tank and cut a new hole as the yj tank would not fit it was about .75 inches too big fron to back too bad to it was a nice polyurethane tank. But I have heard that the early yj 15 gallon tanks do fit.

Years later I now have a definitive answer to this. The large 20 gallon YJ is just a hair to wide for the CJ frame. I bought one anyway because I wanted the 20 gallon capacity and internal fuel pump for the fuel injection system I plan to run. I am looking into how to widen the frame now to match the YJ dimensions

lol well I figured out how to widen the frame, I used a body jack to spread the frame rails after I cut the front gas tank cross member out. After I did that I installed a new cross member from Auto Rust Technicians and my YJ tub/CJ rear cross member from Chief Wahoo which is the best rear cross member you can get

Could you provide some more details about this? Is "a hair to wide" like 1/16" or 3/4"? Did moving the frame rails apart interfere with body mount locations? Does the YJ tank still have the same clearance between the front of the tank and the differential cover when used this way? Please post some pictures of the process if you have any. Is this a "weekend hacker" or "experienced fabricator" project in your opinion? I ended up fabricating my own internally baffled tank to use with fuel injection because I didn't think there were any options that would fit in the available space.

Thanks,
Dave

Ok let’s see, the tank is about .75-1 inch to wide, moving framerails will mess with body mounts in front of rear axle, front of gas tank same location as CJ tank so cover will clear, the cover I have is very close tho, a weekend hacker could do it but it is expensive, it was $200 for the front cross member a whole bunch for the gas tank and skid plate and a decent amount for the rear cross member, I only did it because I could not find info on why the tank wouldn’t fit and I bought the tank while I was in Afghanistan, I also have a YJ tub and needed the rear cross member anyway so the gas tank opening was not a problem. I was at an impass and didn’t want a frame rail mounted fuel pump so I decided forget it I will make it work, I cut both cross members out and used a body jack to spread the rails til the front fit and then had to squeez the rear end of the frame with ratchet straps til they were with in spec for a YJ frame

Worst of all I did not get pictures because it was a night and I didn’t have much light and I was borrowing the welder for the weekend. It only took a few hours to complete tho

Cool, thanks for the info!

Great info, I have a yj tank sitting in the yj tub, and I am getting ready to clean up my 82 CJ frame. Same here, i want to use the larger tank with the fuel pump for the injection.

I recommend the chief wahoo rear cross member and the auto rust front cross member if you want to use your YJ tank
