1970 cj5 134-4cyl (tub off frame and back on, suspension done(2.5 " yj spring lift),assembling engine now) after engine goes in steering upgrade to saganaw.
ok i have benn doing more research and now i think i want yj to cj springs.
what pros and cons?
can i build my own kit and not have to buy the 400.00 kit + springs?
is it as simple as installing the wider spring hangers ?, or is their more to it than that?
1970 CJ5 all stock
ps the kits i have seen do not come with springs, what springs do i order?
(any yj spring 2.5 lift will fit?)
pss do the stock yj springs add any lift over stock cj,s ?
as always many thanks

A) google is your friend.. Try it
B) I'm not 100% about a 70's model but the 76 and up need to have the shackle hangers in the front changed to 2.5" wide. On the 76 and up the spring hanger in the front is already 2.5" wide. You should also modify your spring perch on he front axle. Some people will fill In the stock locator hole and them redrill it and grind the housing to make it fit.. Some will just mount the springs with out adjusting the perches. The rear hackle hangers from the rear of the 76+ can be swapped with the fronts with little modifying. Sorry for not having an exact answer for you but I'm not big on the 75- group. There's companies like BTF and ruff stuff that sell shackle hangers and spring mounts there's no reasonto dump $400 into em. I'd expect to pay $AMC 150 for brackets tops. For a lift its pretty much the same for a Cj and yj.. A yj spring with 2.5" should net 2.5".. Maybe a little bit more.

I have never done it, but have seen quite a few guys do it
if the springs are longer then yes lift will happen
besides hangers the axle pads will need to be changed
best part of this is

you can take pictures, do a thread, and if it is good we can put it in our tech section.

:)Keep in mind you will also have to move your front spring mounts forward as that YJ spring is longer..........the rears should be pretty close........both of course need a wider hanger.........If your looking for a better ride and more articulation the Holbrook Specialites spring is also a good choice.......this is a 1.75 " wide spring , same as yours now but is much longer these work well on the early CJ's..........The center mounts only get moved in on the frame rail.............Check them out.

:D:D:D:D

I checked out Holbrook, $1100 for the complete kit. Add $75 for the extra spring if running hardtop. Sounds great but pricey! Anyone running these? Flex and smoothness us almost worth the extra cash.

the holbrook are out of my price range. i think the yj is the way to go on a budget.
now i have to decide on which ones?
who sells yj spring hangers at a reasonable price?
any idea of how far the hanger has to be moved forward ?
and will i need shocks for a 2 1/2 lift ? , or do the yj 2 1/2s lift the cj more? i would imagen the cj is lighter.
as always thanks

I'm in the same dilemma.... Googled my shoes off trying to find info but nothing specific to pre 76 which I have a 1974?!! I found a thread started on jeepforum back in 2011 and is still going but egos through me off, I would hate to ask a question on that thread!

Rocky road makes a pretty trick yj conversion kit (spring hangers) for early cj's... I think I might do the yj conversion bracket hangers and piece together the rest, billstein shocks, bds yj 2.5" springs etc.
Good luck
