With the addition of some recent electrical demands, I have been considering a larger output alternator. I stumbled on a 105 amp alternator.

However it is a 14 volt unit.

I remember that the charging system is supposed to read more like 13 or 14 volts on a real dash gauge and was wondering if this is compatible.

Or is this totally different and will fry my Jeep?

Thanks very much
brian

You might look at the Delco 12si. It has the same housing and connections as the 10si that you probably have now. It would be a direct exchange, no need to make new brackets or move things around like oil pressure sensor and such. The 12si puts out 94 amps where the 10si only puts out 63 amps. Here is a link that describes the differences in the two.

I guess I left out this part:

I already bought it.....

When I first saw it, I failed to notice the 14 volt part. I didnt pay a lot so it isnt the end of the world if I cant use it. HOWEVER, I dont want to do something stupid and fry components because it is charging at 14 volts....

I think it was designed for a school bus if that matters....

Most of the time I try like heck to NOT do stupid things...Its often a battle I dont win.

Charging at 14 Volts is normal. If it were putting out only 12 Volts, something would be wrong.

since our "12 volt" systems actually charge closer to 14, I wasnt sure if an alternator advertised as a "14 volt alternator" might end up charging closer to 16, etc...

Was thinking of mocking it up on a board with a pulley, running it, and putting a meter on it. Maybe overthinking it a bit, but it sure would suck to reak havok on wiring, fuses, bulbs, etc...

thanks for imput thusfar..!!

No worries, I was just trying to save you some headache fabricating new mounting brackets.:)

:agree:Torxhead and csuengr are right, your Ok at 14V. Mine sets at 14.5 Volts. The higher voltage is necessary to push (so to speak) the current into the battery. (Internal resistance and all) Components that are voltage sensitive will have internal DC to DC voltage regulators which limit the internal voltage of the device to 12v even if the input voltage is say 18 or 20 volts.

You have a part number?

It looked like the mounts are the same as mine.
