So I've posted up here a few times asking about motor swaps and etc but something I never asked really is my iron Duke worth keeping around for Abit? I know it needs a new carb and exhaust and the valve cover gasket replaced but at the same time somebody already deemed it worth of something when they put a SBC hei dist on it. And for as crappy as it runs it DOES start every single time I go out and start it.

Keep the 4 cylinder it matching well with your light duty tranny. If you do decide to go with an 8 cylinder swap in a medium to heavy duty tranny like the T-176 or T-18 .

The idea originally was a 360 and a T-18 . But that's a ways down the road. Unknown mileage on this engine too. Best guess would be 160k+

:us:I'd hang on to it. They may not have a lot power but when they are taken care of they run good a long time. I have 256,000 miles on mine and runs like a top.:us:

yeah that's what i'm thinking. i figure i'll replace the valve cover gasket, get a rebuilt carb, and replace the exhaust and call it a day. see where i'm at after that.

Does anyone know anyone with a carb for the iron duke id like to purchase it or does anyone know a good alternative

I'm going to get a weber carb off eBay and order the fuel regulator also. It costs about the same as a remanufactured varijet

I put a weber 32/36 DGEV ( I think) on mine a year or two ago with a fuel pressure regulator running 3.5 lbs of pressure. Mine ran pretty decent out of the box, so I haven't done any additional tuning. The only drawback is that the linkage that came with it wouldn't line up without binding. I ended up making my own.

Rochester Varajet II. I got an NOS one from a guy specializing in DJ parts on Ebay for $AMC 150 . There's one listed at the moment - use "postal jeep" as a search term.

I love my Duke - not a powerhouse, but about as reliable of a motor as you can get.

Great question......i have an 81 CJ5 with a 4cyl with varijet carb, S4 tranny that i am pulling and originally i was sending it to the heap. Doing a full frame off. It is a tough old bird i will say.....sat on the farm for many many many years, still started without any coaxing other than an extended cranking of a minute give or take. In recent readings, i have seen that these 4's are actually used in smaller dirt track racers as they can wrap high rpms non-stop for hours. Lots of torque, too. They are also put into boats as well.

I am going large just due to the speed limitations...nothing like climbing a 6% or so and flooring it while my top speed is in the 50's.....i make a lot of friends that way for sure....or at least they keep giving me the "your number one finger" as they pass by:D.

Well....would be interested to see if anyone comes up with anything.....if anyone is interested in a complete 4 with tranny, all equipment, let me know!!!! Remember, its not the size.................

Keep the top down and the music up!!

Ciao!
