I believe 1971 was the year that Kaiser sold the Willys line to AMC. Were all 1971 CJs made by AMC? If so, did AMC make any changes that year or were the CJs made that year essentially the Kaiser models?

The Kaiser/AMC deal finalized in 1970. My 71 Ren 2 had an AMC logo on the rear fixed panel. The Kaiser vin tag may have ended in 1970 as well. All 71's had Jeep vin tags and the 72-79 were similar to the AMC car line.

AMC introduced some changes in the 71 model, take a look at the 71 Renegade 2 model and you will see visual changes. The bigger change happen in 72, longer nose, V8, and inline 6.

Hope this helps.

One of the reasons I asked is that some of the mechanic reference guides I've seen will say they cover '66, '67, '68, '69, '70, and '71. I suspected that few changes were probably made in the first year of ownership by AMC; and it seems they carried over the V-6 Dauntless Buick 225 V6 that Kaiser used.

Thanks!

Rollbar, rear fixed panel, rear tire mount, aluminum slotted rims, hood blister, amp gauge, special color, to name a few for the 71 model year.
Running gear stayed the same in 71 except for the one piece rear axle shaft 70.5-71

Unfortunately Buick bought back the V6 in '72 (ooops apparently it was in 74) so they went with an I6. There is nothing wrong with the I6, but somehow the V6 seems so very right in a CJ. So much so that I put a Buick 231 V6 in my '80 CJ. Never was sorry for the upgrade.

No, GM bought back the tooling in 74, and reintroduced the engine in some 75 models

Hmmm thought it was Buick. Read an article somewhere, can't remember where, that the engine tooling was bought back and that's why it left the AMC/Willys line up. Oh well, I still like the V6 and would have liked to see it in more CJ's and that was the whole point.

Buick is a division of GM. Just wanted to post the correct year (74) the tooling, not engine was sold back to GM. That is all.

Buick - GM - Chevrolet - Jimmy, so much the same, yet struggling to be different. Where legal ownership exists I truly never know. Its all good, I don't mind being corrected when I make a mistake. We are good here.

HH-just refer to'em as 'Recall-Motors'.

the quanity of the 231 cu. in./ 3800 cc gm engine produced is way up there.
There are publications that document the buick V-6 thru history. Very interesting reading and a good reference of the events that transpired.
Then there is the Buick/Olds 215 cu.in. aluminum V 8 that went to the british. Another story . Many of the 215 v8's found there way to a CJ Jeep.

mstar - With all the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 's there once were in the world they are surprisingly hard to find these days. The junk yards are more into salvage these days. If they can't sell it right away it gets turned into cash in a crusher.

Was the 215 the engine the British used in their MGB GT. Other than the CJ and if I didn't have a CJ I would buy another MGB GT. Oddly enough I can't stand the standard MGB, but the GT model is near and dear to my heart.

I was lov'n my '67, Triumph 4 mk2 for many years. First car I ever bought.:D

The rights to the 215 went to land rover.I believe they still use a version of it. I agree most of the 231 went to scrap. the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 had its own special characteristics that we all love.

did a quick search on the rover v8. as you guys said it was used in many vehicles and has since ceased production. as with the 231 V 6 it is amazing they lasted as long as the did. I won't be letting go of my Dauntless Buick 225 V6 v6 's any time soon. mike

I believe, just because it was something special, the 225 might be available for a long time. Popularity can be a double edged sword. Like the 231 and other Dauntless Buick 225 V6 's, everybody has'em so nobody keeps'em around.

If the attachment works, I have a picture of my 70' CJ5 Jeep that had a complete rebuilt 231 V6 in it. No other motor sounds the same as an odd-fire V6!

What year is your 231?

If I remember right, it was a 68'. Sold the CJ5 a while ago.

Do you mean 225? The 231 didn't come out until the mid 70s
