1974 304 redline?

I guys. I just installed a tach and it appears to be working correctly. Can anyone tell me the redline on a AMC 304 ? Mine idles between 800 or so and 1200 - depending on the choke. And it looks like I rarely get over 2000 rpm in 3rd at 35 mph or so. Many thanks.

A AMC 304 will easily rev to 5200 and up, but then you may start getting valve float and maybe worse. IMHO - If the bottom end is stock and not fresh I would not go above 4500. How many miles on that engine?

I also agree its not a hot rod its a jeep going past 4500 rpm is not doing much for you WoW thats a pretty CJ5 you have there

Thanks guys. I assumed around 5000 redline. The odometer says 73K but the engine is a replacement but rebuilt around 2000 miles ago...so I really don't know the true mileage.
