Build Thread 1974 CJ5 w\304 build start.
Looks like it is really coming along. Something I noticed though, it seems like there are quite a few leaves in the rear spring pack... Mine (Superlift 3") only has 3 leaves in the back, and it is STIFF! I only run about 24ish PSI in my tires too... I hope your ride isn't too insanely harsh!

madmax, I have read these 2.5" springs will be stiff until breakin...if it stays too stiff I can drop a leaf or two...wont hurt my feelings as far as ride height...looking into different seat options to compensate to some degree for the ride feel though.
I have already gotten the new e-brake bars in and new e-brake cables on, hopefully will be putting on the new tie rod and pitman arm assemblies today and start work on the Transmission and transfer cases so I can puth them and the motor back on frame...it's nice to be moving in the forward direction now.

April 24,
Installed new ss brake lines today (from Classic Tube)...and yes they were not correct in the back and fit in front was a little off too...so I rebent what was needed to fit better.
Took the engine back apart to replace the new remaned crank with another one...seems the first one had bad threads in one hole...
Had a local hydrolic company make up some front brake lines long enough for the 2.5" lift and also made some new power steering hoses...having this done isnt cheap but these guys do great work (Cline's Hydrolics-Greenville S.C.).
Now waiting for several misc. parts to arrive to move forward with rebuilding the engine AGAIN and already have the clutch assy., Transmission and trasnsfer ready to bolt back on and all to go back on the frame. I also have the fuel lines and etc...ready to be put on the frame my next couple of days off.
Happy wrenching to all, later, Ed:chug:

Ed, I was informed that the 2.5" suspension lift would not require extended brake lines. I hope that's not the case, because I just rec'd my new front/rear hydraulic hoses (factory length).

???

Hey Gravy, back hose seems fine, front hose wont work, one long suspension travel and no more brake lines! I once bought the stainless braided hoses but they are better suited for taller suspensions and also the ones I got had a different seat angle than the stock cylinders...had mystery air bleed problems forever.

6\3\12 Been putting things back on the chassis today. With the 2.5" lift...looks like I will need to have the front drive shaft lengthened...feels too extended and sloppy.
Put the new HEI dizzy assy. on today, man it's BIG! Not much room next to the power steering reserv. I didnt get any paperwork and there is no markings on the cap for #1...so I guess I will match up the number one wire location based on the old pics I took before dissasembly. (I'll drop a pic on here tomorrow).
Transmission and transfer hand shift and seem to work as they should..had no "extra parts" left over after re-build.
Still looking for a good donor body (72-75) with not much luck.
Got my exhaust mocked up for looks...Flow-Tech ceraminc fenderwell headers with 3.5" Hooker turnout mufflers....
gonna be nice one day.

6\10\12
have installed the fuel lines with custom bent metal lines to and from the fuel pump....useing the HEI electronic dizzy and I had to custom bend the fuel line around that monster....now will rebuild the carb...waiting for my new tank and sending unit to arrive...will install the ps gear and lines and then start working on the body....oh joy....

Check that camshaft distributor drive gear...

I would either buy a matched set, or put your old distributor gear on new dizzy

( you probably already know this / have done, but just to make sure :D)

Hey JR, The cam gear is new also...so prob. gonna get same result with new dizzxy to new cam gears as I would trying old dizzy gear to new cam gear...will see what it does and if I run into issues I can replace with a matched set later...by the way...I like the "sooners" logo on the side of the jeep.
later, Ed

There are a few different breeds of those gears floating around that have different cuts. (according to the guys over at bull tear)

If anything look at the 2 side by side and make sure they look like they'll jive.

You don't want to just hope it doesn't go bad, then you'll be in my boat with possible damage around the oil pump area, scoring of piston walls, plugged oil passageways etc. Not to mention had to tow it from Loon lk rd. Was almost up on the Rubicon for the 3rd time that trip. (lukily Brother has a car hauler trailer )

But It's only a suggestion bud. You've seen and know yours, I don't / haven't

I just know I'm PO'ed:censored: I didn't take the time to double check my own during dizzy install / upgrade. :bang:

Summit has a pretty good price on a ruged ridge omix ada matched set. like 34.00...

Omix-Ada 17423.03 - Omix-Ada Distributor Drive Gear Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com (these were right for my jeep...)

Thanks Man! My Grandfather and a bunch of clampers used to run as the Sacramento Sooners. The club died out a while back, but grandpa saved all the plaques. My uncle and I are reviving now. We have app ready for the CA 4wd association, to do it right, but the club needs at least 3 members, and we haven't written our bylaws etc yet...;)

:chug: Bud, and I hope everything works out right with the build buddy!

You're doing a real nice job there!

Sorry to hear the PO was less than honest about the engine.

Happened to me with my first car when I was 16. Engine was knocking when I got home. Too bad dumbass gave me his whole set of keys when I left.

Sold them back to him for $500.

Thanks for the advice JR...gears look and feel pretty good...I had a dizzy gear strip at about 70mph on the hwy. once...sounded like a shotgun blast when the cylinder loaded and fired...
as far as your club..."by-laws...you dont need no stinkin by-laws"
I dont do alot of offroading anymore (back thing) I would be glad to be an honorary East Coast member when you get the club going...

Fresh Pics-6\15\12
Please excuse the dust...almost ready to tear into the body rebuild....

Man, you are doing a really nice job! I'd be afraid to drive it!

Update July 14, 2012
Finnally have all the emmissions hoses and all in place on the motor. Time to cover up the motor and frame and start tearing into the body to decide if I can fix what is there or need to replace the tub entirely. Found out the easiest way to remove the tail lights installed by the P.O. (used trailor or boat lights?) was to use 2 very trusted tools.....B.F.hammer and a grinder! I'll post up some pics when I get the tub in bare condition.

Update 8\17\12
Just purchased some patch floor panels and brackets for the original metal tub....from Classic Enterprises...anybody ever use them. The panels look real good and I also purchased a sheet of 16g. 4'x10' to cut other repair patches from ($88). Looks like I'm gonna be welding durring the fall.
I think I will brace the tub and do front floor pans and rocker patches one side at a time , then replace the rear floor and back panel (no tailgate) at one time...any advice that would cut down on my mistakes would be appreciated.

Ed - I used the floor panels a brackets from Classic on my 75. They worked great and I thought they were well made. The only complaint I had is that a couple of the pre-drilled holes on the brackets didn't line up with the body mount brackets on the frame. Good luck with it. You're doing a great job so far.
