I'm looking to do a brake job on the CJ I just bought. It is (from what I understand) one of a few CJs to have drum brakes on the front axle. I'm having trouble finding parts as most websites don't recognize the CJ7 as ever having drums up front. Will parts off of a 1975 CJ5 (or 6) work? What size shoes, etc do I need?

:)Should be 11"x2" shoes both front & back...........go to a place like Rockauto.com and follow the links......I'm sure they have them.

That Omix kit is incomplete and overpriced. It has no adjusting hardware, for one thing.

I just did my 75 front and rear - the fronts are literally identical to the 76 - using all brand new Raybestos parts from rockauto.com. Just head over there and get what you need. Essentially you need a master kit (1 per axle), an adjuster kit (2 per axle, one Left one Right), shoes, drums, wheel cylinders, and that will be every part under and including the drum other than the backing plate.

You'll want to grab for GR8 bolts for the wheel cylinders too. They didn't come with them but other than that the list above is complete.
 
MAKE SURE THE WHEEL CYLINDERS ARE PROPERLY LABELED!!!!

So I finally got the drums off to look at the brakes. I'm pretty sure everything but the drums themselves are a loss. Couple of questions...i pumped the brakes to look for fluid leaks and then couldn't figure out how to re-compress the shoes so I could fit the drum back on, how do you do that? also, i didn't find any hardware that looked like auto-adjust levers. Is that something that has to be OEM or can I install the levers anyway? Thanks

So I replaced the hardware on my brakes and bled all of the lines. Today putting the CJ in the driveway, the brakes were so weak i slow rolled into my boat :mad: Could it be my master cylinder? How would I check that? What other diagnostics can I do to try to figure out my brakes are virtually useless?

:)You have not mentioned everything you did............I would think the most obvious is you still have air in the system.

Did you bleed them all? Possibly not long enough. Did they ever get a hard pedal?

Did you tighten the adjusters inside the drum? :D
