My 1977 CJ5 pops out of gear once I down shift from third to second and release the clutch! It shifts into all three gears with ease and the clutch is smooth?? Any suggestions?

bad synchronizer rings or a bad gear are the usual suspects  both require pulling it out and apart

Gert is it possible it could be the shifter forks on the tower assembly? Can OP take top off (remove the floor pan surrounding) and check that first / diagnose internal while still in the jeep on a 77? I know in my 74 with T-15 3 speed, this was possible.

Also maybe, just maybe, double check your free play adjustment on the clutch. I know you said it's shifting fine and smooth otherwise, but if it's a little tight the added pressure of downshifting "may" pop it out without enough free play? Just an after thought...

Do you have linkage or cable on this jeep? (Clutch system) or has it been adapted?

on my linkage, you should have about an inch of free play before the pedal starts to do anything.

Not sure about cable's or hyro's. Do you have a field service manual for your year?

Look up clutch adjustment.

However, I do not know if this is it, and don't want to get your hoped up... It's a better possibility that Gert was right, but these are the easier things to check before pulling the tranny, and I like avoiding that whenever possible

Check for a broken motor or Transmission mount. I have heard this can cause jumping out of gear but I have no experience with it.

I have never heard of a T-150 jumping out of gear.

I will check when I get home (at work) I believe it to be a manual clutch with linkage?!! This jeep is all stock!! I do notice that my clutch pedal hangs lower to the floor then my brake pedal by a couple of inches:confused:!

:)Gasman,

You mentioned first the clutch lets out high and then it sets a little low:confused:
In either case if it sets lower than the brake pedal chances are you need to adjust the clutch so that it has the proper amount of travel to disengage the clutch and at the same time have the proper free play at the top of pedal travel. That should also have a return spring on the swing pedals under the dash..........
In either case jumping out of gear is like gert mentioned normally a syncro. But if it is not grinding when it goes into second then it could be a host of other problems like a shifter fork as JR mentioned or worn out gears or bearings or just excessive movement in your drive train. Does it do that in Low gear or third if you were to back off the throttle and come down on compression?
Take the cover off and look at your forks and slide each gear through its position while remembering that it must be returned to neutral in order to get the cover back on. Look for any excessive wear or clearance.

Process of elimination at this point.

GOOD NEWS BOYS..... I pulled the dog house cover off, took out the 8 bolts on the shifter tower made a little adjustment on the fork, fitted it back into place To try it again and shifted into second, real carefully i removed 2 screws i had holding it into place and noticed the synchro wasn't engaging over my second gear!! So I then again carefully made a small adjustment on the fork again, gave it a try and wamo....I just took it for a spin down shifting, screeching tires etc!!! It runs perfect!!!:D Thanks fellas
