Build Thread 1977 CJ-7 Resto Project

Made some more progress today. It's looking less and less like a Jeep, which is good for now!

Had the expected rust under the windshield hinges, but was pleasantly surprised that there's none underneath the roll bar. It was also interesting to learn that you have to squeeze the base of the roll bar together to get it out of the tub.

Took all but 4 of the frame bolts out. They look to be in good shape and I was pleasantly surprised how easy they came out. I didn't realize you pretty much have to drop the gas tank to get to two of them... I ran out of steam and left those two. Then I left the two center bolts in, just to be safe until I'm ready to actually lift the body off.

Can anyone tell me how the hell you get the e-brake cable out of the pedal assembly? Do I have to detach the cable from underneath and pull it through? Or is there a way to just detach it from the pedal assembly.

The air assembly looks like it's in pretty good shape, but the mud daubers will be upset that they will have to find a new place to set up shop.

I'm trying really hard to stay organized as I go. Taping screws and bolts together when I can and bagging and labeling as much as possible... Wish like hell I had a Polaroid around the house, as it would be nice to put pics in the bags to refresh the memory months from now when I'm putting everything back together.

If you can grab ahold of the cable and get some slack in it, you can wiggle it out of the pedal assembly. I actually just took the two bolts off of the whole assembly and then the cable came out easy as pie!:D

Looking good by the way, you had a great body to start with on your CJ!:chug:

I wondered if that was the trick. It looks like it should slide right out if you can just get that slack. I didn't get to that until I had been working for a few hours and was too tired, mentally, to figure out simple stuff. I'll go back at it tomorrow and see about loosening the cable from underneath.

Yeah, I'm lucky that the body is in as good of shape as it is. I wish I had left it in Texas instead of subjecting it to that West coast salt air for a two years (1999-2000), but aside from that it's had a pretty good, humidity-and-salt-air-free life. I've uncovered this one spot near the rocker panel area that has rusted all the way through -- about a dime size -- but that seems to be the worst of it, so far. Knock on wood!

To get the slack I depressed the pedal and then clamped the cable with vise grips at the end of the cable housing where it comes thru the pedal assy to hold it still. Then you can release the pedal at which point the cable comes off for you and you can push the cable out the floor :chug:

That sounds like a good trick. I'll give it a whirl tonight and report back.

Well, it's been a solid year since I touched my Jeep, but the weather is nice again and I'm feeling the urge to get my butt in gear.

I'm at a point where all I need to do is lift the tub off and take the body in for metal work and paint.

My question is, though, what's my order of operations here? Body shop then sand blast?

And will any body shop be able to repair this massive dent w/o bondo?
