1978 CJ-7 ignition problems

1978 CJ-7 ignition problems
This is exactly the problem I'm having but I have a standard. I'm thinking of jumping the wires on the neutral safety switch and going from there. I have replaced everything but the starter. I know the starter works cause I jump the wires and it starts up.

My son bought the same year and make...he is having the same problem. Where you able to find the problem Pink ?
PLEASE H E L P !!!!!

Pinky hasn't logged into the site since November. What fixed his jeep very well might not fix your son's. Start a new thread so we can start troubleshooting anew.
Let us know if it cranks over at all. Do accessories come on? Have you replaced anything?
Starting problems could be one of 4 areas:
1. Battery
2. Starter
3. Starter solenoid
4. Wiring going to the above components

With a new thread we should be able to get you going soon.

Thanks Dave.. Been a while since I have worked on anything but do have som knowledge. Well..enough to be dangerous lol he crossed the battery terminals while trying to jump start it. The 12 Volt line opposite the battery side of the solinoid opened up. Respliced, and added different battery, Nothing. Tried shorting across the solinoid and nothing. Replaced solinoid on firewall and No accesorry power anywhere ie headlights, brakes wipers,ignition...NOTHING. Shorted across new solinoid and it WILL turn the crank on the motor, just wont start. Checked all the glass buss fuses under the dash and all ohm out ok. Thinking main fuse or fuseable link somewhere ? PLEASE H E L P !!!! lol Pretty cool...but Old vehicle !!
Was running before :o) Sure it will again at some point.
Thank You for caring !!! An American Dream :o)

I'm sure this is a simple fix...
Once you step back and think about how relatively simple a Jeep is to work on, it wont be too complicated.

The best bet is to start a new thread and see what happens... I know you will get responses before the day is over..!!

I'll be watching for the new thread...
BTW: when you re-post, be sure to start with explaining EVERYTHING that has been done to your Jeep, and the FULL problem at hand. Too frequently someone will post a problem, and forget to include an important fact, thus preventing anyone from diagnosing it quickly.

Oh, and be sure to fill out your profile with Jeep information and all mods, etc.. It will help in diagnosing problems as well.

good luck
brian
