I recently purchased my first Jeep, a 1980 CJ7 with an L6. I'm getting mixed information in regards to which Transmission is my Jeep..

Is it a T-5 ? If so, what do you fellas recommend I do in order to service this (it seems to be working just fine, I just drove it 450 miles home from where I bought it). I'd just like to get the piece of mind knowing its got fresh fluids, etc.

Well... Assuming nothing has been changed from stock 1980:

If it's got 5 forward speeds, it's a T-5 .

If it's got only 4, it's either a SR4 (later to become the T-4 in 1981), or it's a T-176 .

A clue is the curve of the shift lever (and placement of lever). If it's 'S' curved, and toward the rear of the Transmission , it's a SR4 /T-5 .

A somewhat straight lever, and more on the top of the Transmission , it's a T-176 .

Of the three mentioned Transmission , the T-176 4spd, is by far the more robust.

The T-5 will not like being matched to the wrong tire size and axle gearing. Or any sort of engine swap to a higher HP/TQ engine. The internals are too weak, and it will shorten it's life. The AMC T-5 , is NOT the World Class T-5 that was used in the Mustangs. Which had stronger internals.

Originally, the T-5 came with ATF used as gear lube. IIRC, AMC put out a service bulletin recommending the change to regular gear lube. Someone will have the correct information posted shortly.
