I recently purchased my first Jeep, a 1980 CJ7 with an L6. I'm getting mixed information in regards to which Transmission is my Jeep..

Is it a T-5 ? If so, what do you fellas recommend I do in order to service this (it seems to be working just fine, I just drove it 450 miles home from where I bought it). I'd just like to get the piece of mind knowing its got fresh fluids, etc.

Well... Assuming nothing has been changed from stock 1980:

If it's got 5 forward speeds, it's a T-5 .

If it's got only 4, it's either a SR4 (later to become the T-4 in 1981), or it's a T-176 .

A clue is the curve of the shift lever (and placement of lever). If it's 'S' curved, and toward the rear of the Transmission , it's a SR4/T5.

A somewhat straight lever, and more on the top of the transmission, it's a T176.

Of the three mentioned transmission, the T176 4spd, is by far the more robust.

The T5 will not like being matched to the wrong tire size and axle gearing. Or any sort of engine swap to a higher HP/TQ engine. The internals are too weak, and it will shorten it's life. The AMC T5, is NOT the World Class T5 that was used in the Mustangs. Which had stronger internals.

Originally, the T5 came with ATF used as gear lube. IIRC, AMC put out a service bulletin recommending the change to regular gear lube. Someone will have the correct information posted shortly.
