I am a new proud owner and as I have been testing the functionality of different things I discovered the wipers don't work the way they are supposed to. I suspect they are on backwards so I started looking at different pics and some have wipers (off position) resting over passenger side and others at driver side. Which is correct? I am in AZ and won't need them much but when I do I want them to work! Thanks all.

Since you have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I'm guessing you most likely have a CJ5 or CJ7 so those are the pics I posted (it would help later if you added year and model to your profile :) .)
This forum will help you with just about anything you could want to know about your CJ and for anything else just ask and we will be happy to help!

CJS should park the wipers on the passenger side.

Thanks so much. I will undo what someone else did and mount them correctly

Mounted correctly. I just pulled them off switched them. I will see if it worked. Next time it rains....

I'm not certain you will get the results you are looking for with that fix. It may be that when your wipers cycle, they move father to the right and scratch your paint. I would make sure that the problem is not in the mechanism set up.

There is an arm bolted to the motor that connects to the linkage. It's about 2 inches long. The motor stops in the same place in it's rotation every time and how that arm is attached determines where the wipers come to a stop. You will have to access that arm, unbolt it, and move it 180 degrees. then put it back on the motor and button it all back up. All of that may be more than you want to dive into. Understandable! I have allowed mine to be parked on "the wrong side" for years. It doesn"t bother me at all:)

Motor being the wiper motor. On your CJ, an 84?, you will need to put the window down to access, because it should be behind the dash pad, drivers side. I know, right!? As long as they do the job when I need them that's what I hope for. Good luck

I had mine parking on the driver side when I got mine 6 years ago. I did the fix. As stated above. The little linkage attached to the wiper motor needs to me taken off and reattached 180 degrees. That will be the fix. Don't turn your wipers on until you put the arms back the way they were. They will hit the cowl and do damage to the paint and/or the wiper linkage.

And don't replace your linkage with new crown junk. If you need to replace any parts, find original stuff from an old Jeep. Much better quality.

Rats. I really appreciate all the info. I was hoping my "fix" was a fix. The only reason I even noticed is I tried the wipers when they were parked on the wrong side and instead of going along the glass, they went down towards the hood. That's when I thought maybe they were backwards.

If they are parked now and rotate away from the pass. side to the drivers side you should be ok. Try them out before it rains, won't really hurt on a dry windshield BUT if it was me I would pull off the arms, turn them, not which way they rotate from the PARKED position and see what they do. :)

Great thing about the CJ7 , people have been working out all of the kinks for the past 40 years. Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies. Lots of info to be had, don't be afraid to ask. Also, search past posts. Welcome!

:) MY wipers won't shut off in a standard shut off spot. I just shut it off with the switch. My preferred parking place is on the drivers side. In that position they are the most out of the line of sight.

I got to "try" the wipers after I mounted them in the correct position and the work! AZ rarely gets rain but we got some and my "fix" worked. Now to find a knob for the control (my leatherman wasn't ideal while driving).

google up Morris 4X4, select your model year in the left column, click on switches, knobs, and cables. No more Leatherman for that function needed.

Update: I got a new wiper knob from Morris and I am embarrassed to say I do not understand how the billet thing works. (Install says level 1 beginner). So I am glad it doesn't rain here much....
Sheesh.

In our 79 there is a torx set screw that allows the knob to tighten on the flat spot on the switch control arm. It's small and hard to get to. I had to use an allen type torx tool from my sewing tools to access it. Hope this helps. 😀

No set screw on my 84. Knob just slides on and off. No flat spot. More like a v grove

That don't sound 'rite'.
Can you post a picture maybe.
My knobs I bought from Currie some 25yrs ago all had set-screws.
