I've torn down 85 CJ7 and about to remove the tub which is completely rusted, time and effort to restore would be too much, better to find another. What is the best route to go? I have a lead on a MD Juan tub that is rust free, holes drilled for 85 CJ7, and primed.

Anyone have any experience with (Link)-> Rudy's Classic Jeeps LLC -<

Would like to get some advice/guidance.

MD Juan is really the only one who makes steel tubs as they bought all the tooling when AMC died. All vendors buy them and work them to be better than originally supplied by MD. I bought a Willy's Overland tub and it was a perfect fit.
I haven't used Rudy,s.

Are you seeking a new tub or a good used one? New re-productions from MD Juan, Kaiserwillys, etc are great options - pre-drilled, "Jeep" stamped, primered, ready to go. You're looking at $4,500-$5,500 range. Of course you can also get fiberglass, aluminum (over $6,000), and even kevlar tubs as well. A fiberglass tub can be had for about $2,500 (basic), or more for "heavy duty". US Body has a deal on a new fiberglass tub for under $3,000. It does not have all the normal reinforcements (door and windshield hinges, body mounts, etc) but may be a good deal if you don't need all that (offroader only with no doors or folding windshield).

Partsbreakers has some good used original tubs from $2,000-$3,000.

I'm probably looking more at new since they are ready to go. What I'm really afraid of is the frame, once i can see all of it, might not be pretty

Beauty of a CJ. You can buy near every piece on it brand new if you had to. Get a new tub; get an entire frame brand new if needed, replacement frame sections; it's all readily available. All about the work you want to do and the cost you can handle/justify/explain to your wife.

If your looking for a better quality tub than what MD Juan offers, you should look at Palm Beach Custom or Real Deal Steel...they cost a little more, but are USA made with USA parts.

I've heard that the MD Juan primer needs to be completely removed before you paint it with a good automotive paint...there coating it just to prevent rust during shipping.
